TaylorMade Stealth Irons Review by TGW
Technology
TaylorMade includes their signature CapBack design in the new Stealth irons with a new twist. They have added a Toe Wrap construction. By combining these two components, it expands the distance, forgiveness, and feel benefits of the original CapBack technology. This advanced engineering shifts mass from the extreme high toe of the head and repositions it in the sole to create an extremely low center of gravity. The result is an iron that is easy to launch with a hot trajectory throughout the set.
Then they gave the Stealth irons an even faster, more forgiving face made out of 450 stainless steel. A 450SS face has a precisely positioned sweet spot that spans the most common impact zones, delivering explosive ball speeds and consistency in all the right places.
Finally, TaylorMade included two of their signature iron technologies to fine-tune the performance of the Stealth irons. The ECHO Damping System is included for an even better feel. A softer polymer blend touches more contact points across the face to reduce unwanted vibrations and make the Stealth irons feel more like a forged iron. Their patented Thru-Slot Speed Pocket on the sole allows the face to flex more for greater ball speed and more forgiveness, especially on shots hit low on the club face.
Performance
We tested out the TaylorMade Stealth irons with the help of Rick Hatfield, TGW’s Master Fitter and resident product expert. Our testing was conducted indoors at the TGW Pure Performance Center using Foresight Sports launch monitors.
For this test, Rick was using the 7 iron which has a loft of 28°. His average swing speed with this club was 83.4 mph which is in his usual range of a 7 iron. However, Rick noted a marked increase in ball speed at an average of 117 mph. His average launch was 16.2° and his average spin rate was 4,037 rpm which is both a little lower launch and lower spin than a typical 7 iron. Rick’s maximum height and descent angle were still impressive, all adding up to an average carry distance of 175 mph.
Who It’s For
The TaylorMade Stealth irons are game improvement, distance irons. Any golfer who wants to hit the ball farther will want to try out this new design. Made to be faster, farther, and more forgiving, these irons are sure to be popular among higher handicap players looking to launch the ball for more fun on the golf course.
Appearance
TaylorMade’s Stealth irons feature a cleaner, more traditional look than your usual game improvement iron. Some of this is owed to the CapBack design which eliminates the big traditional cavity. At address, you notice these irons do have a thicker topline and a good amount of offset for game improvement golfers while helping frame the golf ball squarely.
Fit & Feel
The TaylorMade Stealth irons feel and sound extremely solid when you hit the golf ball. They provide a pleasing, powerful experience and glide through the turf for a smooth feel and impressive turf interaction.
