The Clubs In Your Bag As An Adult

Finding Your Set of Adult Golf Clubs

Is there such a thing as an all-around golf set? Are there 14 clubs that most anyone could use and still be happy with their performance on the course? Well, that’s a bit like asking if there’s such a thing as a typical golfer.

As you can see, we’re walking into the rough here. A lot of people would immediately answer that no two players are alike and, therefore, no sets of clubs can be a like. Perhaps this is true, but there are some fairly typical situations that every golfer is likely to encounter: long drives, sand traps, medium hits to the green and, of course, putts. While preferences will vary depending on the course and its conditions, here is a brief guide to the clubs adults should have in their golf bag.

  • Choose the right driver The driver will likely be your most impressive-looking club, as well as your favorite. After all, who doesn’t like the club that gets them the most yardage?
  • 5 wood When you don’t need the distance a driver gives you but you want to hit the ball with solid control or a little more loft, the 5 wood is the way to go.
  • 3 Hybrid – Because hybrids provide easy accuracy, they’ve found supporters among beginners and experts alike. Though they don’t give you the distance provided by a wood, they make it easy to hit with precision and control.
  • 4–9 Irons Irons are the core of your golf set. In general, the hybrid should do the work of the 2 and 3 irons, so there’s just no need to lug those around.
  • Sand wedge and pitching wedge – These two radically angled clubs might be the least-used clubs in your bag. When you get into a bunker or sand trap, however, they’ll be your best friend.
  • Putter – Close to half of all your shots will be putts, so make sure you practice plenty and familiarize yourself with the many varieties available until your find your favorite. This is one club you’ll use more than any other.

As many of you probably know, the rules of the game allow each player to carry 14 clubs. So far, we’ve covered only 12. If we were to recommend two more clubs, chances are we’d stir up a storm of disagreement. So we’ll leave it up to you to figure out which two clubs should complete the adult’s golf club set.
