Titleist presents a new utility option for all golfers: the U-Series. With two different models, the U500 and U510, there is a design to fit every player. They provide more distance than a standard long iron but spin less than a hybrid to expand your options in the long game. The U-Series irons will provide the shot you need when you need to go long. TGW had an exclusive conversation with Corey Gerrard, the Global Product Marketing Manager from Titleist to bring you the details of these exciting new golf clubs.
TGW: The Titleist U-Series utility irons have two different models, how do you categorize the two?
Corey Gerrard: We have the U500 that we call the player’s utility iron. It’s compact and versatile and gives you that high launch, soft landing, and precision.
Then there is the U510. this is more hybrid performance in an iron shape. It has a wide sole for easy launch off the ground or off the tee.
TGW: Let’s start with the U500. What makes it that player’s utility iron?
CG: It’s a very technical iron in a compact shape that the player’s iron golfers love. It has a high-strength forged steel face that increases speed all over the face. There is also an average of 98 grams of high-density tungsten in each one to promote a higher launch. It’s great for the player who wants more launch and speed but likes the compact shape and versatility.
TGW: So how does the U510 compare?
CG: The U510 is more for the player who wants hybrid-like performance but doesn’t want to play the traditional hybrid shape. It has a larger, more forgiving shape and a wider sole that promotes easier launch. It still has the forged face and high-density tungsten weighting but the sole and shape are different. It also comes in a 1-iron.
TGW: It looks like, just as in hybrids, both these models have graphite shafts.
CG: Both the U500 and U510 have the HZRDUS Smoke Black graphite shaft. The U500 has a 90-gram version with low spin and mid-low launch. The U510 has an 80-gram version with mid launch and mid-low spin. Because these are utility irons that are more hybrid-like, the graphite shaft is a good fit for these clubs.
TGW: And there’s also a new version of Tour Velvet grip?
CG: Yes, we still have the Golf Pride Tour Velvet 360 grip but it’s made with a new compound to make it more durable. It’s softer and tackier for better grip but also more durable.
