Scotty Cameron 2022 Phantom X Putters Review by TGW
Technology
Every 2022 Phantom X putter features a unique integration of steel and aluminum. Nine of the 10 models are made with a solid, precision-milled 303 stainless steel face and body that is then expertly fused with a 6061 aircraft-grade aluminum sole and flange component. That solid stainless steel face is carried through to the body and wings. It is then integrated with an aluminum sole and flange for performance and playability with a consistent sound and soft feel. This design is utilized in the new Phantom X 5, 5.5, 5s, 7, 7.5, 9, 9.5, 11, and 11.5 models.
The new Phantom X 12 putter is made with an aluminum face and sole with stainless steel wings for maximum MOI. It also has a slimmed-down flange section and extended alignment aid to create a longer-looking, easier-to-aim model when compared to the prior generation.
Each putter head goes through Scotty Cameron’s signature silver mist process. The result is a radiant yet glare-resistant and near-permanent finish and texture. The aluminum components are misted and anodized in black to provide a unique contrast. Cameron’s familiar three-dot alignment theme appears on the Phantom X 5, 5.5, 5s, 7, and 7.5 putters as unpainted, raw circles milled into the stainless steel. The sight lines on the Phantom X 5, 5.5, 5s are painted black, while the sightlines on the Phantom X 7 and 7.5 employ a combination of black and white lines. The Phantom 9, 9.5, 11, 11.5, and 12 models feature sightlines accented in light gray.
Titleist and Scotty Cameron have also updated the Pistolero Plus grip with a non-slip and decorative texture that, like its predecessors, has less taper in the low hand. This provides golfers with the ideal combination of size, feel, and feedback when paired with Phantom X mallet putters.
Performance
To see how the 2022 Phantom X putters performed, we gave them to Rick Hatfield, TGW’s Master Fitter and product expert. Our testing was conducted at the TGW Wichita Pure Performance Center with launch monitors powered by Foresight Sports.
When hitting these putters, Rick found that they all setup easily behind the golf ball and look great with a sleek color scheme and simple graphics. He described impact as extremely soft when hitting the golf ball, a signature feel for golfers who have used a Scotty Cameron putter before. Each putter was also quite stable and accurate with plenty of stability in a variety of mallet shapes.
Who It’s For
The Scotty Cameron 2022 Phantom X family of putters is a great fit for all golfers. With a variety of head shapes, alignment aids, and shaft bends, there is a putter in this lineup to match every player. Each model in the 2022 collection features minimum or near-minimum toe hang so these putters are a great match for golfers who take the putter straight back and straight through or have just a slight amount of arc. Whether you like extra alignment or minimal help, there is a Phantom X putter model for you.
The Phantom X 5, 7, 9, 11, and 12 models have mid single bend necks that give them minimum toe flow and a nearly face-balanced design, make them the best fit for golfers with a straight-back, straight-through putting stroke. The Phantom X 5s model also best fits a straight putting stroke but features a straight neck hosel rather than the mid single bend.
The Phantom X 5.5, 7,5, 9.5, and 11.5 models all have a small slant neck for near-minimum toe flow, making them the best fit for golfers with a slight arc in their putting stroke.
Appearance
Scotty Cameron’s 2022 Phantom X putters are all compact mallets or mid-mallets. They feature soft lines and sculpted contours for an appearance that flows down from the topline into the ground. This gives these golf clubs a distinct look that is smooth and fast, inspired by fast cars and jets. The graphics on the crown and sole have been updated while a variety of shapes of alignment options provide a model to fit the eye of every golfer.
Feel & Sound
Because the new Phantom X putters feature solid milled faces, the feel and sound are solid at impact. They produce a satisfying click with responsive feedback when you strike your putts. These types of Scotty Cameron putters have also been known to feel better over time so the performance you get when hitting putts only gets better the more you use these golf putters.
