Choosing Proper Golf Clubs For A Teenager
If you’re looking to purchase clubs for your teenager, it’s likely they already know their way around the course; perhaps they’ll be playing the game for years to come. It’s important to remember, though, that the teenage years are years of transition, and even if your teenager thinks he’s old enough for adult clubs that could last him through the years, he may not be. In fact, if you have a boy, you might have to tell him that he’ll be hitting with ladies’ clubs.
This depends, of course, on how hard your kid swings. These days you can find a variety of clubs designed for the transitional teenage years. They go by different names: ladies, varsity and junior are all categorized as very light men’s clubs. No matter what kind you get, a few club features remain essential for teenage players. These clubs will help improve their game and carry them through the transitional period as they progress from junior player to adult golfer.
- Oversized driver – When it comes to purchasing a driver, more cubic centimeters are better (within limits, of course). With more cc’s, the sweet spot is larger and the club is therefore more forgiving. Though not as accurate, the large head will add distance to the shot.
- Hybrid 3 and 4 irons – These offer best of both worlds in one club! Hybrids provide the distance of a driver and the precision of an iron. Due to their low center of gravity, they also tend to send the ball higher. This combination is great for lowering scores and increasing confidence on the course.
- Wide-sole irons – You might notice that a number of these clubs feature a lower center of gravity. This allows the ball to soar higher and travel greater distances. For the 5, 7 and 9 irons, as well as the sand wedge, a wide sole will provide this extra pop.
- Alignment putter – A putter with alignment wings or guides helps reduce spin on the ball and makes shots more consistent. These are also called mallet putters or face-balanced putters. Whatever the name, they’re great for helping young golfers master putting.
