TaylorMade Stealth UDI Iron Review by TGW
Technology
The TaylorMade Stealth UDI hybrid iron starts with a hollow body that creates a low and forward center of gravity. This gives the golf club a powerful, penetrating trajectory. Then they put on a forged 4140 steel face that is incredibly lightweight, thin, and strong for explosive speed. That forged face also features Inverted Cone Technology to enhance the sweet spot, protect ball speed all across the face, and promote straighter shots.
TaylorMade then filled the head with their new SpeedFoam AIR injection, an ultra-light urethane foam that brings the club face up to the legal limits of speed while fine-tuning sound and feel at impact. The newly engineered SpeedFoam Air is 69% lighter than the previous version, saving up to 3.5 grams of weight to further optimize the mass for an even better launch. The new formula also provides a sweet sound and solid feel when paired with the fast, flexible face.
They also included their Thru Slot Speed Pocket on the sole of the UDI to maximize speed and forgiveness, especially on shots hit low on the face.
Performance
To test the TaylorMade Stealth UDI iron, we took them to Rick Hatfield at the TGW Wichita Pure Performance Center. Rick is TGW’s Master Fitter and resident product expert. For this test, Rick used the 18° 2 iron.
Rick’s average swing speed for this test was 91 mph. His ball speed with the Stealth UDI was extremely explosive at an average of 130 mph. His average spin was incredibly low as well at just 2,800 rpm, providing an average launch of 12.7°, helping this golf club perform similarly to a driver. Rick’s average carry distance with the UDI was 207 yards.
Who It’s For
TaylorMade’s Stealth UDI hybrid iron is made to be a versatile option in the long game for more skilled golfers. Similar to their P-series of irons, this golf club will commonly be played by scratch golfers on up to about a 10 handicap. For golfers looking for control and versatility over a long iron or a hybrid, this is the driving iron for them.
Appearance
The TaylorMade Stealth UDI features Tour-inspired shaping with input based on what professionals around the world like in a hybrid-type golf club. This golf club has a thinner topline, refined leading edge, and moderate sole to improve the way it interacts with the turf. It also has minimal offset to enhance workability for better golfers.
Feel & Sound
The feel and sound of the TaylorMade Stealth UDI hybrid irons can be described as solid. With its SpeedFoam AIR-injected club head, contact feels and sounds great with feedback that lets you know you made a solid impact with the golf ball.
