TaylorMade Spider S Putters Use Tungsten To Unlock New Levels Of Stability

TaylorMade’s Spider putters have been extremely popular for several years now. A large part of that continued success is TaylorMade’s commitment to advancing and improving on their designs. The latest version is the TaylorMade Spider S putter. Featuring a new squared shape, the Spider S putter is made to be even more stable than ever. How do they do it? With multi-material construction, heavier tungsten weights, and even a new shaft. Read on to see how the design comes together.

TaylorMade Spider S Putter Review

Technology

With Spider S, TaylorMade set out to create their highest stability Spider putter ever. To do that, they had to get the materials just right. It all starts with a lot of tungsten. The squared shape of the club head features a tungsten weight bar on the back. Each weight bar is specific to the length of the putter to get the counter-balanced weight, so that it feels exactly right.

Then TaylorMade put even more tungsten in the front of the club head. On the front of the sole there are two 48-gram tungsten weights on the right and left to make the head incredibly stable. If you hit the ball away from the center of the face, these weights keep the head stable and limit its ability to twist and send your putts off-line. “All this tungsten weight was a result of golfers telling us ‘give me all the forgiveness you got’,” said TaylorMade’s Chandler Carr.

To accommodate all that tungsten weight, the rest of the club head is made from high-grade 6061 aluminum. The lighter aluminum body allows heavier weight to be used in the back and perimeter of the head to create a deeper center of gravity and higher MOI rating. That is what makes for a more forgiving putter.

To top it all off, TaylorMade uses the KBS Stepless CT Stability shaft in the Spider S putters. The entire length of this steel shaft has been reinforced to make it more stable to give you a smooth, easy putting stroke without worrying about the shaft whipping or flexing. These shafts feature a single bend hosel to make the Spider S putters face balanced.

Who It’s For

The TaylorMade Spider S putters are face-balanced, so they are an ideal fit for golfers who have a straight-back, straight-through putting stroke. Any player who could benefit from added stability and forgiveness, or likes the heavier, steady feel of added weight, will enjoy the performance of these TaylorMade golf clubs.

Performance

Our testing of the TaylorMade Spider S putters was conducted by Rick Hatfield, head golf pro at Flint Hills National Golf Club and TGW’s resident product expert. During testing, we found the putter extremely easy to aim. The shape of the putter helps frame the ball and line it up to your target. The stability was quite noticeable during testing. These Spider S putters did not want to twist at all no matter where we made contact with the ball. Finally, the Pure Roll insert got our putts rolling true with great feel. As an added bonus, the dimensions of the cavity in the Spider S putter was just the right size to get your golf ball out of the cup.

Appearance

When TaylorMade describes the Spider S putters as “stability squared”, the look of these golf clubs certainly reflects that line of thinking. At address, the Spider S has a more minimalist look than previous Spider putters. The more square design features a hole in the middle that saves weight and allows for heavier tungsten to be used in the back weight bar and from sole weights. Triple alignment lines on the top make lining up your putts easier as well.

Feel & Sound

TaylorMade’s new Spider S putters feature their signature Pure Roll insert so the feel of these golf clubs is very soft. The Spider S putters are not so soft that you can’t feel your putts off the face, but it is a pleasing, soft feel and roll. We also noted a solid “click” sound at impact. It is not too loud or too muted, but it sounds incredibly solid. The sound and feel of these putts very much matches the performance of the Spider S.
