CALLAWAY EPIC FLASH WOODS REVIEW
Drivers
Fairway Woods
Technology
Callaway kicks off 2019 with new golf clubs to get you from the tee to the green. It all starts with the Epic Flash metalwoods, featuring all-new Flash Face technology to give you more ball speed and distance. Then they have brand new Apex irons, a design that many golfers have been anticipating for quite some time. To finish it off, there is a new PM Grind wedge to sharpen your accuracy and control around the greens. You can see an in-depth, in-hand preview of all these clubs in the exclusive video at the top of this post.
The new Epic Flash drivers and fairway woods are driven by the new Flash Face technology. Through artificial intelligence and machine learning, Callaway’s computers cycled through 15,000 face designs before arriving at this architecture. The inside of the club face includes subtle ripples designed to work together to elevate ball speeds for even more distance. Combine this new design with their signature Jailbreak Technology and you have some of the most innovative golf clubs in Callaway history.
Who It’s For
Callaway’s Epic Flash woods are made to provide golfers of all types with speed and distance. From the standard Epic Flash models to the spin-killing Sub Zero options, there are high-performance options in drivers, fairway woods, and hybrids for both game improvement golfers and those who prefer player’s clubs.
Performance
Callaway’s Epic Flash put artificial intelligence to use to create high-performance golf clubs and propel club face technology into the future. During our testing, we saw 5 mph ball speeds faster on average when compared to previous models. All that extra speed generated more distance and with more speed all across the face, we found them to be more forgiving with a proper dispersion on every shot as well. The performance of Flash Face Technology delivered more distance and speed as promised.
Appearance
The Callaway Epic Flash drivers and fairway woods offer a sleek appearance with the black carbon fiber crown. It looks great down by the ball and the carbon fiber weave is a unique look. Callaway used green and yellow accents which really pop and give the clubs an added appearance of being fast.
Feel & Sound
The word that comes to mind when hitting the Callaway Epic Flash drivers and fairway woods is explosive. They sound and feel powerful when you make contact with the golf ball. Taking the carbon fiber material out of the sole of the club really drivers the feel and sound to a pleasing, powerful level.
CALLAWAY APEX 19 IRONS REVIEW
Apex 19 Irons
Apex Pro 19 Irons
Technology
Also new for 2019, Callaway has a new edition of their Apex and Apex Pro irons. The Apex line is known as the ultimate forged players’ distance iron, highly regarded for their premium craftsmanship and incredible sound and feel. These irons are extremely soft because they are forged from 1025 mild carbon steel. For the first time, Callaway has included their urethane microspheres in a forged Tour performance iron. These microspheres absorb vibration without slowing down the face, giving you the best possible combination of speed, distance, and feel.
Who It’s For
The Apex and Apex Pro irons both fit into the player’s category. The Apex irons are player’s distance golf clubs. They are ideal for golfers who want the compact shape and workability of a players’ iron with the benefits of distance technology. Meanwhile, the Apex Pro irons are more of a pure player’s iron with their forged construction while still offering distance and feel benefits. The Apex Pro 19 irons are ideal for the better golfer who wants all the benefits of Tour-level design without sacrificing speed or distance.
Performance
With the Apex 19 irons, we saw another increase in ball speed. We picked up an average of 2 mph and about 5 yards on average over previous models. That adds up to half a club longer. With the Apex 19 irons, you can expect to put the same swing on the golf ball and see more distance which can help with scoring and shortening up the golf course. Launch angle and peak height were ideal with proper descent angles to help hold greens.
Appearance
Both the Callaway Apex 19 and Apex Pro 19 irons feature a player’s shape and size. They are compact and look great down by the ball, especially for skilled golfers who want to be able to shape and create their preferred shot. Golfers who are looking for speed and distance but don’t want to look at a large iron by the ball will love the appearance of the Apex irons.
Feel & Sound
The feel and sound of the Callaway Apex 19 and Apex Pro 19 irons is pleasing. For the first time, Callaway has included their urethane microspheres in a forged golf club. So not only do you get the soft feel of forged irons, the urethane microspheres dampen unwanted vibration to fine-tune that feel and sound right where golfers want it.
CALLAWAY PM GRIND 19 WEDGES REVIEW
Technology
Finally, there is a new collaboration between Phil Mickelson and Roger Cleveland: the PM Grind 2019 wedge. They started by including the Groove-in-Groove technology first introduced in the Mack Daddy 4 wedges to create even more points of contact with the ball, giving you even more spin on wedge shots. Then they increased the amount of offset and made the toe even higher. More offset lets you move the ball back in your stance and get your hands in front of the ball to hit better knockdown shots. A higher toe pulls the center of gravity up, better aligning it with where you make contact out of tall grass. Finally, the PM Grind 2019 wedge features the C-Grind sole with more relief in the heel and toe, delivering smooth and clean strikes through the turf.
Who It’s For
Finally, the Callaway PM Grind 19 wedges offer a versatile option for skilled golfers around the green. Golfers who want to manipulate and open up the club face to hit precision shots will benefit the most from this design.
Performance
With the Callaway PM Grind 19 wedges, we noticed just how versatile they were. When you wanted to open the face and control trajectory around the greens, the PM Grind did the trick. Added control and spin with the ability to manipulate these clubs make them a high-performance option around the greens.
Appearance
The appearance of the Callaway PM Grind 19 wedges is unique because of its signature high toe shape. These wedges stand out on the course and in your golf bag thanks to that design. Down by the ball, the shape of this club looks right at home, especially as you open up the face to slide it through impact and hit that high flop shot. The high toe design inspires confidence to manipulate the face and hit the shot you need around the green.
Feel & Sound
The Callaway PM Grind 19 wedges feel and sound solid at impact. They do not shock your hands with you contact they golf ball, rather the help you finish your wedge shots with touch and finesse. All golfers will be pleased with the sound and feel of these PM Grind wedges.
