TGW’s Golf Shoe Fitting Guide

Golfers are no strangers to the idea of properly-fitted golf equipment. But your golf clubs aren’t the only gear you should make sure fits you for optimal performance. That’s right, golfers should not forget about their golf shoes. The right size of golf shoes not only make sure your feet are comfortable but testing shows that your performance can improve as well. But how do you know if your golf shoes fit correctly? TGW’s guide tells you what you should look for when selecting the right-sized golf shoes.

How To Measure Your Golf Shoe Size

The first step to picking out the proper size of golf shoes is to measure your shoe size to establish a starting point. Shoe sizes can be specific to the manufacturer but having a general idea of your size is the best place to begin.

The most accurate way to measure your shoe size is using a Brannock Device. This has been the standard way to measure shoe sizes for more than 70 years. It measures not only the length of the foot but also the width and arch length. When using a Brannock Device, it is important to note that if the heel-to-toe length and arch length differ, you want to use the larger of the two sizes to get the proper fit. This will align the ball of the foot with the flex point of the shoe, which is ideal.

If you do not have access to a Brannock Device, you can manually measure your golf shoe size with a ruler. First, trace the outline of your foot on a piece of paper. Then use a ruler to enclose the outline of your foot in a rectangle. From there you can measure the length and width of the rectangle which will be approximately the same as the measurements of your foot.

Keep these tips in mind when measuring your shoe size:

  • It is natural for your feet to swell throughout the day as you walk so measure near the end of the day for the most accurate, comfortable sizing.
  • Wear the same socks you would wear when you play golf for the most accurate fit.
  • When measuring your shoe size, sit down with your legs at 45° angle so you do not create pressure that causes your feet to flatten out and toes to spread.
  • It is common for your shoe size to change throughout your life so measure every time you buy a new pair.

Trying On Your Golf Shoes

There are a number of things to look for once you know your size and put on a pair of golf shoes. Nearly 70% of all people wear the wrong-sized shoes so it is important to know the signs of a properly fitting pair.

Once you have your shoes tied, there should be about ⅝” of space, or the width of your thumb, between the top eyelets. This can vary some due to factors like arch height but is a good place to start. If there is more space between the top eyelets then the shoes are too narrow. If there is less space there, they are likely too wide.

Also when tied, take note of the appearance of the show between the laces and the toes. It should be smooth. If this area is bunched up or rippled, this means there is extra room inside the shoe. The proper fit is to have about a half-inch of space between your longest toe and the end of the shoe. If you cannot wiggle your toes then the shoes are too small. If there is more than that half-inch or so of space then they are too big.

Finally, get up and move around with your golf shoes on. As you step, the breakpoint of the shoe should be perfectly in line with the point where your foot flexes. There should be no excess movement in the shoe as you walk either. Your feet should not slide or slip. Simulate your golf swing to test this as well. Make sure nothing feels too loose or too tight as you practice swinging a golf club. You want your golf shoes to fit securely in the heel and forefoot while being snug in the mid-foot to prevent any movement while you swing.

Signs Your Golf Shoes Are The Wrong Size

Shoes that fit correctly do not require a break-in period. If your shoes do not feel comfortable enough to go out and play a round of golf as soon as you put them on, chances are you have the wrong size. Here are a few things to look for that indicate you should select a different golf shoe size.

  • Eyelets that are too close together indicate shoes that are too wide
  • Eyelets that are too far apart indicate shoes that are too narrow
  • Bunching or rippling in the toe means the shoes are too loose or too wide
  • Stretching or bulging around the toes means the shoes are too narrow
  • Excessive wear in the heel and on the insole is a sign that your feet are moving around too much inside shoes that are too big
  • If you can slip your golf shoes off without untying them then they are too big
  • Physical discomfort such as blisters, back pain, leg pain, and fatigue are all signs of poor-fitting golf shoes

Thanks for the tip about how I should also account for swelling when fitting for golf shoes. I’d like to buy new Puma golf shoes soon because my husband and I are going to move to a home that’s near a golf course. I’m very inclined to take up golf as a hobby whenever I want to have some time off from the internet.
