TaylorMade Insight From The Master Designer
TaylorMade’s master wedge designer Clay Long recently joined us on our TGW Twitter account to answer questions about the new TaylorMade Tour Preferred EF wedges and short game play, Here’s a look at some of the questions and answers we received as Clay imparted some TaylorMade insight to golfers.

.@docllns Iron oxide is pretty rough, so you might see a little more spin. EF wedge has microtexture to help in a similar way. ^CL — tgw.com (@TGW_tweets) May 28, 2015

What benefits will golfers notice right away with electroformed grooves?
Slightly more initial spin and much less spin decay over time since the grooves are much more durable.
Do most golfers prefer the dark smoke finish?
Golfers prefer wedges that down glare for sure, but based on feedback, people are highly interested in the dark smoke finish.
What is the feel like from the 1025 carbon steel body?
It’s a cross between silk and butter, with a little bit of velvet.
How did you decided to use nickel cobalt on the face of these wedges?
The material properties of it lend themselves nicely to anti-corrosion and its tough as nails + it will plate.
What benefits are golfers who haven’t updated their wedges in the last 3 to 5 years missing?
A 5 year old wedge upgraded to EF will get much much more spin since their old grooves are worn. With EF, they will get more spin longer due to increased durability. CPB – Cost/birdie will go down.
How does the ATV sole grind benefit golfers and what type of golfer would this be ideal for?
It’s dependent on turf conditions and golfer of technique. A guy with a steep swing, might benefit from it, or if you are playing on really soft sand or firm turf, you might prefer ATV.
