Callaway MD5 Jaws Wedges Feature the Most Aggressive Groove in Golf

Callaway introduces the new MD5 wedges, making another breakthrough in wedge design and short game performance. Chief Wedge Designer Roger Cleveland and his team at Callaway have developed a dramatically different groove design from the MD4 wedges called JAWS. The final product is a high-performance wedge with outstanding spin, incredible feel, premium shapes, and two striking finishes.

Technology

The big story in the new MD5 wedge is the JAWS groove design. These new grooves are milled at a 37° wall angle to create an even sharper edge. Compare that to the MD4 Wedges whose grooves were cut at just a 5° wall angle. That sharper edge allows the groove to grip and spin the ball at impact. Golfers will notice a difference at 80 yards and in, with one-hop-and-stop performance. But the JAWS design doesn’t just increase spin. It also produces more consistent spin. Each groove is made to the tightest tolerances Callaway has ever produced so you know you are getting the best spin shot after shot from every lie.

Callaway also made a couple of changes to their grinds. They have introduced a new low-bounce W grind with sole taper and heel relief. This makes the wedge more playable around the green while using the entire bounce on full shots. They also reduced the amount of bounce in the C grind while widening the middle of the sole and increasing the heel relief.

Callaway also implemented an optimized head progression with the MD5 wedges. The 46°-52° wedges are slightly smaller to create a natural shape progression from the short irons to the more traditional shaped wedges at 54° and up.

Callaway included their Groove-in-Groove Technology in the MD5 after introducing it in the MD4 model. Milled micro-grooves between the JAWS grooves add grip and spin by increasing the number of contact points with the ball. Three raised micro-ridges between each groove mean there are 84 different contact points with the ball to generate even more spin.

The MD5 wedges are also made from 8620 mild carbon steel. This material is famous in golf for its satisfyingly soft yet solid feel at impact. The center of gravity is also aligned with the impact point so you feel when you hit the ball pure.

Finally, Roger Cleveland always designs clubs to look appealing at address and the MD5 wedges are no different. The 46°-52° wedges are slightly smaller to blend into the shape of your short irons and match your set. Wedges lofted 54° and above are made a little larger to create a natural progression into your highest lofted wedge.

Who It’s For

Callaway’s MD5 wedges are made for every golfer looking to maximize spin in their short game. The aggressive groove design adds bite for golfers of all levels, no matter what shot you want to play.

Appearance

The Callaway 2022 MD5 wedges feature a traditional chrome finish. They offer a classic look in the bag and set up down by the golf ball to inspire confidence and eliminate distractions.
