Technology

The Wilson Staff Model and Wilson Staff Model R golf balls are 4-piece, Tour-caliber golf balls. Four layers give golfers better control and more spin where you need it. You get maximum distance and workability off the tee and in the long game while maintaining stability and control in approach shots and around the greens.

Inside each golf ball is a V-Cor advanced performance core. This unique core makeup is designed to produce maximum velocity off the club face so golfers get greater distance where they need it.

The urethane cover features a seamless 362-dimple pattern. This pattern was created to smooth out the airflow around the ball for a lower, more piercing trajectory.

The difference between the two different Staff Model golf ball offerings is in the paint, or lack thereof. Wilson Staff Model golf balls are painted with a finely controlled process that ensures an even, uniform coat of paint for more consistent performance and flight. Wilson Staff Model R golf balls are unpainted. The R stands for “raw”. During testing, Wilson discovered that leaving the golf ball unpainted resulted in a nearly flawless performance. By not painting the dimples, the Staff Model R golf balls achieved a lower flight and grabbed wedges better for even more spin.

Performance

We tested the Wilson Staff Model and Staff Model R golf balls with the help of Rick Hatfield, head golf pro at Flint Hills National Golf Club and TGW’s resident product expert. Each golf ball went through a series of shots using a driver, a 7-iron, and a wedge to measure performance all over the golf course.

Starting with the Staff Model ball, we began with the 7-iron test. Rick saw an increase in ball speed of just more than 2 mph over similar-type golf balls which resulted in 2-3 more yards of carry distance. The 7-iron also produced more spin which will help hold more greens from your 7-iron distance. With the driver, the Staff Model golf ball produced just a little bit more spin but also increased ball speed by more than 2 mph. The result was an average carry distance of 254 yards. Finally, with the wedge, Rick noted a low trajectory and plenty of stopping power even though it produced slightly less spin.

Then we moved on to the Staff Model R golf ball. Performance was similar to the Staff Model with the 7-iron. Ball speed increased a bit more than 2 mph against competitors and we saw 2-3 more yards of carry distance for an average of 164. With the driver, the Staff Model R did spin more than the regular Staff Model. Even with more spin, Rick averaged 256 yards of carry distance with the unpainted golf ball. Around the greens, the Staff Model R golf ball produced the most spin with an average of 6,400 rpm. That type of spin produces a one-hop-and-stop shot on the green. In addition to all those numbers, the Staff Model R ball also flies straighter. We measured dispersion with the 7-iron and saw a reduction in left dispersion of 2.4 yards and a reduction in right dispersion of 6.6 yards.
