Wilson Staff Model CB Irons Review: The Cavity Back With Forged Performance

Wilson declares that the cavity back is back with the introduction of the Wilson Staff Model CB irons. These golf clubs are inspired by the Wilson Staff V6 irons, designed to meet the requirements of their Tour Staff players with modern control, workability, and forgiveness. It is all wrapped up in a package that delivers the classic look and feel Wilson irons are known for. The TGW team has the inside story on the technology and an exclusive video to show you just how they perform.

Technology

The Wilson Staff Model CB irons have a club face that is forged from 8620 carbon steel. This strong, solid material gives these golf clubs a signature soft feel like a muscle back iron with the consistency and forgiveness of a cavity back design.

The cavity of the club head features Wilson’s Tri-Brace Stabilizer. This unique structure helps transfer more energy to the golf ball at impact while also providing incredible sound and feel, shot after shot.

Finally, Wilson added 20 grams of tungsten weight in the toe of the long and short irons of the Staff Model CB set. That added weight in the perimeter of the club head increases stability and lowers the center of gravity for reliable, consistent shots every time.

Performance

To test the performance of the Wilson Staff Model CB irons, we enlisted the help of Rick Hatfield. Rick is the head golf pro at Flint Hills National Golf Club and TGW’s resident product expert. Rick’s average swing speed during this test was 80.7 mph. His average ball speed was 107.4 mph. He launched these irons at an average of 16.8° with an average spin rate of 6,069 rpm. Overall, Rick averaged 149 yards of carry distance with a lower, more penetrating ball flight using the slightly heavier TT Dynamic Gold S300 steel shaft.

Who It’s For

The Wilson Staff Model CB irons are ideal for golfers with higher club head speed. These irons are best fit for players who are not looking for increased distance, but rather a good balance between forgiveness, workability, traditional appearance, and classic soft feel.

Appearance

Wilson Staff Model CB irons feature a traditional players’ iron look. It has a thin topline, very little offset, and a compact head size.

Feel & Sound

The feel and sound of the Wilson Staff Model CB irons are classic. It is exactly what you would expect from a forged golf club. The face feels soft and buttery and the compact shape with a thin sole provides great turf interaction. They sound quiet at impact with no distracting audible feedback on your shots.
