Wilson D9 Irons Review: Wilson’s Longest Distance Iron Yet

Wilson D9 irons are built to be their longest distance iron yet. Taking a new approach, Wilson compared hundreds of head shapes and Power Hole configurations to find the ultimate game-improving setup. Learn all about the technology and see how the design they settled in performs in TGW’s exclusive video and review.

Technology

Wilson started out designing their D9 irons with the best configuration of their signature Power Holes. These holes are strategically positioned on the sole and filled with urethane. This technology allows for maximum face flex to improve speed and create a sweet spot so big, you can’t miss it.

The D9 irons have the lowest center of gravity Wilson has ever created in an iron. This low CG enables a high, easy launch with steeper descent angles to increase control around the green.

These technologies combined with cavity back forgiveness in a players’ iron shape launches high, spins less, and maximizes distance with pinpoint accuracy.

Performance

We tested the performance of the Wilson D9 irons with the help of Rick Hatfield. Rick is the head golf pro at Flint Hills National Golf Club and TGW’s resident product expert. For this test, Rick used the 7-iron with an average swing speed of 832 mph. Rick’s normal ball speed with a 7-iron is around 114 mph. With the D9, his average ball speed was 117.4 mph. The ball launched high with an average launch angle of 18.8°. He also saw a reduction in spin with an average of 4,862 rpm. Overall, Rick averaged 170 yards of carry distance, an increase over his usual 7-iron distance of just more than 160 yards.

Who It’s For

The Wilson D9 irons are made for the distance player. Golfers who want to maximize distance and forgiveness with an iron that is easy to launch will benefit most from these golf clubs.

Appearance

The Wilson D9 irons are easily recognizable as an oversized iron built for speed and distance. They feature a little bit thicker topline and longer length from heel to toe.

Feel & Sound

The feel of the Wilson D9 irons is best described as explosive. They glide through the turf as well with no digging so they feel great all the way through the swing. They sound powerful at impact as well, giving you confidence that will hit the ball farther.
