Titleist U-505 Utility Iron Review – Made Like An Iron, Flies Like A Hybrid

Titleist created the new U-505 utility iron to allow golfers to take control of their long game with a utility iron that can do it all. Designed using input from Tour professionals, they made a utility golf club that offers the look, feel, and sound of an iron with the high, explosive launch of a hybrid. The review team at TGW put the new high-launching, compact utility iron from Titleist to the test. See how it performed in our exclusive video and learn all about the technology packed into the U-505.

Technology

Titleist U-505 Utility Iron Face

The Titleist U-505 utility iron features a thinner forged face and new Max Impact 2.0 technology that makes these Titleist’s fastest utility irons ever. Their forged SUP10 L-face design is thinner than ever with a higher COR rating which means more speed and more distance in your long game. The club head is hollow with a chassis built from 17-4 stainless steel combined with a highly resilient polymer core to support the thinner, faster face and produce an even better feel and sound

Titleist U-505 Utility Iron tungsten weight and hollow body

Titleist utilized denser D18 tungsten weights in the U-505 utility iron so they could concentrate more mass to precisely locate the center of gravity in each club head. This is what produces that high, fast launch like a hybrid. The re-engineered muscle plate and multi-material design free up more weight for the dense tungsten to create a more precise CG. That center of gravity is now slid lower and more toward the heel where Tour pros felt it improved launch the most.

Performance

We tested the performance of the Titleist U-505 utility irons with the help of Rick Hatfield. Rick is TGW’s master fitter and our resident product expert. For this test, Rick was hitting the 3-iron with a loft of 20°. His average club head speed during this test was 86 mph which produced an impressive average ball speed of 128 mph. Rick’s average launch angle was 14° with an average spin rate of 3,200 rpm. All of those factors totaled an average carry distance of 201 yards for Rick.

Who It’s For

The Titleist U-505 utility iron is best fit for better golfers who like the shape, feel, sound, and control of their long irons but are looking for increased speed and launch. Oftentimes, more skilled players prefer the appearance of iron over a hybrid. For those golfers, the U-505 utility provides the launch, speed, and distance of a hybrid with an iron-like design.

Appearance

Titliest U-505 Utility Iron top down appearance

Titleist built the U-505 utility iron to look more like the rest of the irons in your set. These golf clubs feature a shorter blade length, shallow club face, and wider sole. This shape and appearance help provide maximum versatility and long game performance while maintaining a more iron-like appearance.

Fit & Feel

During testing, Rick noted an improved sound and feel at impact in the Titleist U-505 utility iron over previous models. They sound and feel more like a traditional iron which will appeal to the better golfer.
