Titleist is known as the leader in the golf ball world for a reason. They constantly work on improving their offerings and give golfers options to drive their performance forward by using input from golfers of all types. The spring 2018 launch of the new AVX performance urethane golf ball was one of those landmark moments that prove Titleist’s mindset.
Now, in 2020, they have redesigned the AVX golf ball to fit the feedback from golfers who told them they wanted improved feel and more spin in the short game without sacrificing distance. How does Titleist build on what they started in 2018 and take it to a new level in 2020?
Titleist 2020 AVX Golf Balls Review
What’s New For 2020
Golf balls are designed and built from the core out because the core is the engine that drives the high performance of the ball. That is exactly where Titleist started in the new AVX golf ball. The core in the 2020 version of the AVX ball is larger and has a lower compression compared to the prior generation. Then they put a high-flex casing layer around that larger core to work together to increase ball speed and reduce ball spin in the long game, which is the ideal formula for creating more distance.
The key to this performance is getting the golf club to interact with the core of the ball. This is why the core is so important for distance. Activating the core technology of the golf ball requires a harder and faster impact. This compresses the ball which unlocks the energy in the core.
Therefore, the core is even more important in the long game where you swing faster, so making the core larger and lower in compression makes it easier to activate and explode the ball down the fairway. One more benefit of the larger core is an even softer feeling ball. When the golf club interacts with a larger, lower compression core, you feel how much softer that ball is.
When Titleist’s golf ball team made the core bigger in the 2020 AVX golf balls, they then made the cover thinner than the original AVX model. The cover is made with a new cast urethane that is specifically designed for the AVX golf ball. You won’t find this formulation on any other golf ball. It is designed by Titleist’s chemists to increase spin and control for better greenside performance, while at the same time being thinner and allowing you to interact with the core more easily in the long game.
Titleist also gave the cover a unique aerodynamic dimple design that favors a lower, piercing ball flight. Each Titleist golf ball gets its own unique aerodynamics package and the 2020 AVX golf balls are built for maximum consistency on all shots.
From The Experts
When Titleist first introduced the AVX golf ball in 2018, many golfers told them it was the golf ball they had been waiting for. But there is always room for improvement when innovation is the name of the game. Once Titleist went to the drawing board to create the 2020 AVX model, golfers said they wanted more distance, more spin, and softer feel.
“The improvements to AVX are a direct result of their insights and the inventiveness of our R&D team to take this design to the next level – and we expect golfers to see better numbers across the board. The new AVX is faster and longer, it performs better around the green, and delivers even more of the incredibly soft feel that golfers love about this product,” said Frederick Waddell, Senior Product Manager, Titleist Golf Balls.
