Technology
First up is the Titleist 2022 AVX golf ball. This is the urethane model in the lineup, made for premium performance that is closer to the Pro V1 and Pro V1x. The softer cast urethane elastomer cover system increases greenside spin and provides even more precise control on shots into the green. A reformulated core and high-flex casing layer generate high speed and low spin in the long game. The core, casing layer and cover all work together to deliver an incredibly soft and responsive feel for every shot. Finally, a new spherically-tiled 348 catenary dimple design delivers a more consistent flight and longer distance.
The next golf ball in the 2022 lineup is the new Titleist Velocity. It all starts with a faster NaZ+ cover designed for speed and more playable greenside feel. Then, Titleist developed the new higher speed LSX core for faster speed on full swing shots and delivers maximum distance. It is all finished off with a spherically-tiled 350 octahedral dimple design that promotes a consistent and high ball flight.
Finally, Titleist has the 2022 TruFeel golf ball for players who want a great-feeling combination of distance and control. The reformulated TruFlex Cover delivers the softest feel of any Titleist golf ball. If you prioritize feel but do not want to compromise on quality and performance, TruFeel is for you. A large, faster core along with high-performance aerodynamics work together to deliver longer distances. Finally, that thinner, reformulated TruFlex cover delivers improved feel and control for all of your shots around the green.
Performance
We tested the performance of the new Titleist golf balls with the help of Rick Hatfield. Rick is TGW’s Master Fitter and product expert. Testing was conducted indoors at the Wichita Pure Performance Center using Foresight Sports launch monitors. Rick hit each golf ball with 4 types of shots: a half wedge, a full wedge, a 7 iron, and a driver.
Starting with the Titleist AVX golf ball, Rick used a 56° wedge to hit a 45-yard half wedge shot and an 85-yard full wedge shot. On the half wedge shot, Rick’s average spin was 6,450 rpm. While not as high as a premium golf ball, that is still plenty of spin and control for the majority of golfers. With the full wedge shot, Rick averaged 9,500 rpm which is quite a high spin rate, in line with the more premium golf ball options. Moving into the 7 iron, Rick noticed a medium launch angle with this golf ball to go with an average of 4,580 rpm of spin and 169 yards of carry distance. That performance remained consistent in the driver as well with medium launch, an extremely low average spin rate of 1,634 rpm, and 264 yards of carry distance.
Next we tested the Titleist Velocity golf ball. Rick’s average spin on the half wedge shot was 6,414 rpm which is a good spin rate of a distance golf ball. With the full wedge shot, the performance was similar with an average spin of 8,200 rpm, another good spin rate of a golf ball in this category. Moving on to the 7 iron, this golf produced a higher than average launch for Rick along with 4,779 rpm of spin and an average carry distance of 166 yards. Finally, using the driver, Rick again saw a slightly higher launch to go with a low spin rate of 2,155 rpm and average carry distance of 258 yards.
Finally, we tested the Titleist TruFeel golf ball. Rick started with the wedges where he noted some surprisingly high spin rates for a golf ball in this category. He averaged 6,414 rpm on his half wedge shot and 9,829 rpm on the full wedge shot. When Rick hit the TruFeel with a 7 iron, he recorded a slightly higher launch along with a moderate spin rate of 4,735 rpm and lots of carry distance averaging 169 yards. For the driver, Rick again saw a slightly higher launch but noticed an extremely low spin rate of 1,729 rpm all adding up to an average of 259 yards of carry distance.
Who It’s For
The Titleist 2022 AVX golf ball is designed for golfers looking for a more penetrating trajectory and more long game distance through reduced spin. The AVX still maintains high spin rates in the short game for the control you need around the greens.
The Titleist 2022 Velocity golf ball is designed for golfers who wanted to maximize their distance, especially in the long game. They made this golf ball to be as fast and powerful as possible to help you get the most out of every swing while still maintaining a playable feel around the greens.
The Titleist 2022 TruFeel golf ball is designed for golfers who appreciate soft feel as it is the softest feeling golf ball in the Titleist family. This version is also made for more distance with a thinner cover for even more improved feel around the green.
