It has been a big year for irons in the world of golf. A number of different designs and technologies were introduced by the major club makers, all designed to help you play better golf. We have seen SpeedFoam Technology from TaylorMade, urethane microspheres from Callaway, even a new category of performance called player’s distance with the PING i500 and Titleist AP3 designs.

We made our picks for the best-selling irons of 2018 from two categories: game improvement and players irons. Then we put together this handy chart to show how they compare to each other. Here you’ll find all the important factors such as shape and construction as well as what type of golfer each club is for and how they perform so you can match your choice to the way you play. Once you’ve made your choice, just click the product name and shop for your favorites!

Cavity Back or Blade style

Here is a quick reference about a couple of the factors we examined. For style, each design is listed as either a cavity back or a blade. Cavity back irons feature a cut-out back, with weight moved toward the perimeter of the club head to make them more forgiving and easier to hit. Blades are thinner with more a flat back. This generates a lot of feedback and golfers will feel every shot exactly where they hit it.

Cast or Forged construction

With construction, each club is either cast or forged. Cast irons are created by pouring hot metal into a mold. That pliable, molten metal can be poured into a variety of pre-made designs. Forged irons are made from one solid piece of metal, start to finish. They are generally made from softer metals because they are easy to stamp out into the design of the iron model.
