Chandler Carr of TaylorMade told TGW that the V Steel has a cult following so it made sense to bring it back for a new generation of fairway woods. “It’s very intuitive to hit. You don’t need to put the whole sole through the turf,” Carr said.
With three SIM fairway wood models to choose from, TGW reviewed them all to show you the benefits of each option. You can also see them in action in our exclusive videos.
TaylorMade SIM Max Fairway Wood Review
Who It’s For
The TaylorMade SIM Max fairway wood captures the majority of golfers, especially in the mid-handicap range. Golfers looking for maximum control will benefit from the SIM Max and enjoy more distance with a boost in club head speed.
Performance
We tested the TaylorMade SIM Max fairway wood next to the M6 fairway. The SIM technology provided an increase in club head speed which delivers more ball speed which is what gives you more distance. Our tester’s club head speed was around 97 mph and ball speed jumped up to around 142 mph. We saw 5 more yards of carry, around 221, with roll out of around 240 yards of total distance. SIM technology delivered its promise of more speed when we tested this club.

TaylorMade SIM Max Draw Fairway Wood Review
- Center of gravity moved more toward the heel
- Slightly reduced face progression
- Manipulation of the divergent face and topline
The V Steel sole makes this fairway wood more playable from all types of lies while the draw bias and Twist Face design make it even more forgiving. If you struggle with a slice, this is the SIM fairway wood option for you.
Who It’s For
The TaylorMade SIM Max Draw fairway wood is a clear game improvement option with its draw bias and weighting that helps correct a slice. If you tend to miss shots to the right, this is the SIM fairway wood option for you. Golfers who want more speed and distance but need to fix a slice will find this golf club best for them.
Performance
When compared to the previous M6 D-Type fairway wood, the TaylorMade SIM Max Draw fairway was significantly faster. Our product expert was able to swing this golf club at 100 mph, a 6 mph increase over the M6 version. That transferred into 7 mph more ball speed. Those combined speed increases with about 600 rpm less spin added up to around 6 yards more carry and about 12 yards in total distance. The draw bias saw about 28 yards of left movement so golfers who miss right will see significant forgiveness with this model.

TaylorMade SIM Titanium Fairway Wood Review
Instead of a steel face, the SIM Titanium fairway wood is made with a ZATECH ultra-strong titanium face. This special type of titanium is extremely thin, fast, and hot. “This fairway wood is super long. It’s made with a special type of titanium, it’s really cool, this club is a missile,” Carr said.
The multi-material body of the club also includes titanium along with an 80-gram steel soleplate to take the center of gravity even lower for high launch, low spin, and explosive distance.
Who It’s For
The TaylorMade SIM Titanium fairway wood is for the golfer with moderate to higher club head speed. Golfers who are fairly consistent and looking to fine-tune their fairway wood performance will benefit from this model as they will also pick up some speed and distance.
Performance
The TaylorMade SIM Titanium fairway wood was a fun one to test. Like the rest of the line, our product expert say more club head speed and ball speed when compared to last year’s M5 model. More speed means more distance and we saw an average of 2 yards more in distance. The V Steel sole also performed noticeably on this golf club to help the head glide through the turf which is important with a fairway wood.
