TaylorMade SIM2 Max Irons Review by TGW
Technology
The TaylorMade SIM2 Max irons feature an all-new Cap Back design. Different from a cavity back or muscle back iron, these golf clubs use high-strength steel and super lightweight polymers in the back to maximize distance, forgiveness, and feel with an extremely low center of gravity.
These irons feature a new club face design that is faster and more forgiving than previous versions. This design is more flexible with a 40% larger sweet spot with a design that approaches the legal limit of speed set by the rules of golf. Each face also includes uniquely positioned Inverted Cone Technology to increase the size of the sweet spot and reduce side spin on mis-hit shots.
They have also re-engineered the ECHO Damping System for an even better feel. A softer polymer blend now touches more contact points across the face to reduce unwanted vibrations and make the SIM Max2 irons feel more like a forged iron.
TaylorMade included their patented Thru-Slot Speed Pocket on the sole of the SIM2 irons. This feature allows the face to flex more for greater ball speed and more forgiveness, especially on shots hit low on the club face.
The SIM 2 irons are available in a SIM2 Max OS model. These irons are TaylorMade’s most forgiving. They feature an oversized club head, progressive face height, wider sole, and stronger lofts for greater distance and easier launch.
Performance
We put both the TaylorMade SIM2 Max and Max OS irons to the test with the help of Rick Hatfield. Rick is the head golf pro at Flint Hills National Golf Club and TGW’s resident product expert. Testing was conducted using a 7-iron from each set and Rick’s average swing speed was right around 86 mph. With the SIM2 Max, Rick achieved an average ball speed of 116.3 mph compared to 117.3 mph with the OS version. The SIM2 Max had a higher average spin at 5,733 rpm and an average carry distance of 164 yards. The SIM2 Max OS produced an average spin rate of 4,853 rpm to go with an average carry distance of 169 yards.
Who It’s For
The TaylorMade SIM2 Max irons are game improvement golf clubs for golfers that want maximum distance and forgiveness benefits. They are made to be fast and forgiving to help golfers hit the ball further and be more accurate.
The TaylorMade SIM2 Max OS irons could be called the super game improvement option. Their oversized design, wider sole, and stronger lofts make it even easier to launch the ball with greater distance for golfers who want the most help possible.
Appearance
Both the TaylorMade SIM2 Max and Max OS irons feature larger club heads, thicker toplines, and wider soles. They fit the appearance golfers expect from game improvement irons. These golf clubs do look different than the traditional forgiving cavity back design thanks to TaylorMade’s Cap Back technology that does not stick out at address.
Feel & Sound
Both the TaylorMade SIM2 Max and SIM2 Max OS irons feel great with the ball coming off the face and interact perfectly with the turf. They sound powerful and explosive, letting you know you made solid contact and expect maximum distance.
