TaylorMade P790 Irons Review
TGW: Tell us about what went into creating the next generation of P790 irons.
Chandler Carr: As we looked at what made the P790 such a popular iron, we realized maybe we don’t need to change everything. P790 earned a reputation as the iron that maybe you thought you couldn’t play because of its profile, but it was loaded with performance for all types of golfers. So then it became, how do we take our best and make it better?
TGW: How do you sum up the new P790 irons and who they are made for?
CC: We’re targeting the frequent golfer who is looking for distance and forgiveness. But all golfers are adapting to it because of the player’s iron profile. More golfers, regardless of ability level, are enjoying that compact look so the performance appeals to everyone.
TGW: What technologies did TaylorMade keep in the second generation of P790 irons?
CC: The hollow-body construction and SpeedFoam were important to keep. It has been extremely popular. The 3 iron through approach wedge all have a hollow body and are filled with SpeedFoam for a crisp, solid feel. We also still have the Thru Slot Speed Pocket Design to generate high ball speeds and be more forgiving when you hit it low on the face.
TGW: And what is new in this version of the P790 irons?
CC: We have reworked the center of gravity locations for higher launch using new, heavier tungsten weighting. The face is thinner and hotter as well (1.65mm). We also softened the leading edge and widened the sweet spot.
TGW: It looks like there will be a couple other options in the P790 line as well.
CC: There are a couple other offerings with the P790 name this year. We have the P790 Ti irons. With these, we took the gloves off to really challenge what it means to make an iron. Our goal was to take the players look and feel and maximize it. The Ti irons feature extreme tungsten weighting in the toe. Its titanium construction allows us to move more weight around and utilize more tungsten. These are our longest players irons; players will see distance that’s almost like the M6 irons.
We also have the P790 UDI. This fits right in with the other P790 irons as a 2 iron. It’s a utility iron or a driving iron. The UDI gives golfers another option in the long game. It has the forged hollow body, SpeedFoam, tungsten weighting, and Thru Slot Speed Pocket like the 790 set.
