Exclusive Interview: TaylorMade P760 Irons with Matt Bovee

Today, TaylorMade lifted the curtain on the new P760 irons. These clubs are designed as a better player’s iron that includes maximum speed and distance benefits without compromising on sound, feel, and looks. As the newest member of the P700 iron family, the P760 design is replacing the P750 and P770 models. Your chance to pre-order them is coming on October 26 and they’ll hit stores on November 2.

To get you ready for these new irons, we talked with Matt Bovee, the product manufacturing engineer at TaylorMade. This exclusive interview has all the information you need to prepare for this new release that’s creating a buzz throughout the golf world.

TGW: Give us a little background on the development of the P760 irons.

Bovee: Feel and look are paramount for better golfers. We were looking for a traditional blade construction with that soft, forged feel. The P790 irons have been lightning in a bottle. They were faster and more forgiving but did not compromise on sound and feel. And better players are still picking it up. We knew we had something really big with SpeedFoam Technology.

So we saw an opportunity to bring the feel of 790 with a little extra performance into a more compact players iron shape. We wanted to create a true progressive performance set, designed for better golfers with premium sound, feel, and a great compact look.

TGW: Where do the P760 irons fit into the current P700 family?

Bovee: This will replace the P770 and the P750. It’s more compact than the P790. The shorter irons look like the 750 and as they get longer they look more like the 770. They never get bigger in appearance than a 770 but the performance sets up more like a 790. Something a lot of people may not know is that the number refers to the length of the blade.

TGW: How was the SUS630 face developed? What are the benefits golfers will see from that technology?

Bovee: Since the 3 through 7 irons are all hollow, made of soft carbon steel and filled with SpeedFoam, we used this higher strength stainless steel to make the face to weld on. Using a higher strength material like that allows you to make the material a little thinner, stretch it out and make it more forgiving. The stronger material also allows for stronger, more durable grooves.

We’re not necessarily looking for P790 distance. These irons are for golfers who are willing to play something that looks and feels great that you can work; they’re not really worried about distance. The thin construction allows us to monitor the COR of the clubs so we don’t get any weird jumps in distance gaps as you move through the set.

TGW: What benefits will golfers see in this kind of mixed construction set with hollow, longer irons and one-piece forged, shorter irons?

Bovee: We asked ourselves, what does this golfer want in long, middle, and short irons? This is what we found.

  • Long irons – added speed and playability without compromising look and feel, willing to make a little trade-off but can’t shift over to game improvement.
  • Middle irons – transition into clubs that are more for scoring, a little bit of forgiveness but more concerned with launch conditions, distance control with a great look and feel.
  • Short irons- all about precision and control, they understand this is where you score on the golf course.
TGW: Finally, what type of golfer are the P760 irons ideal for?

Bovee: These irons are perfect for better golfers who want workability, aren’t concerned with distance and want something that looks great and feels great. You get more forgiveness without compromising on look and feel. The hollow-body construction with SpeedFoam is the only way to guarantee everything sounds and feels at a premium, Tour level.
