TaylorMade continues its tradition of consistent, milled performance with the third generation of Milled Grind wedges. By milling the grinds on their wedges, TaylorMade achieves a level of consistency in every wedge they make with exact precision and performance golfers can count on. TGW’s review team takes you inside the latest design with an in-depth look at the newest technology.
TaylorMade Milled Grind 3 Wedge Review by TGW
Technology
The signature technology in their popular wedges, TaylorMade’s milled grind sole ensures precision where it matters most. This grind is made to maximize consistency and maintain levels of tolerance that can be repeated across every Milled Grind 3 TaylorMade makes. That is a level of performance you can count on with every wedge on every swing.
TaylorMade also uses a raw face on the MG3 wedges. This face is designed to oxidize over time and with use so it will add friction and spin through the life of the wedge. By not using plating on the face and grooves, TaylorMade also creates a more precise geometry for optimized spin and feel. The ZTP Raw Grooves are sharper, deeper, and narrower, with radii engineered for more greenside spin and optimal performance in wet conditions. TaylorMade even added raised micro-ribs between the full grooves to add texture to the face and increase spin.
In addition to these technologies, TaylorMade utilizes a thick-thin mass placement design to precisely locate the center of gravity in each wedge. This provides more precision, greater control over trajectory, and an incredible feel thanks to a center of gravity more aligned with the impact point.
Performance
To test the performance of the TaylorMade Milled Grind 3 wedges, we enlisted the help of Rick Hatfield. Rick is TGW’s Master Fitter and resident product expert. We tested these wedges with Rick hitting a 60° on a 40-45 yard shot, using about a half-swing. This is a common shot golfers will hit where they need to generate a lot of spin so we wanted to see how they performed in this condition. His average spin rate on these shots was 7,600 rpm, giving him all the spin and control he needed to hit and hold the green while knocking it close to the flag.
Who It’s For
TaylorMade Milled Grind 3 wedges are made to fit a wide range of golfers from low to higher mid-handicap players. The versatility and consistent performance along with maximum spin benefits all golfers. Players who want control and precision with a great-feeling wedge will love the performance of the Milled Grind 3 design.
Appearance
The TaylorMade Milled Grind 3 wedges feature a traditional blade-style wedge shape. They have a compact shape with thin lines and a traditional toe instead of a high-toe design that many wedges feature today. TaylorMade also offers the MG3 in two different finishes: a sleek black and a traditional chrome.
Feel & Sound
The TaylorMade Milled Grind 3 wedges feature an extremely soft feel thanks to their milled construction. They also feel solid and smooth, gliding through the turf with no digging thanks to the unique design of the sole with no extra bouncing.
