Technology

TaylorMade Spider EX Putter

The new TaylorMade Spider EX putters feature a new multi-material construction that creates a deep center of gravity for better distance control and incredible stability. Lightweight aluminum and composite in the frame create a better performance around the circumference of the club head. Heavy tungsten back weights specific to each loft locate the center of gravity deeper in the head. Finally, two 28-gram heavy steel weights are co-molded into the heel and toe areas of the frame to boost stability and forgiveness. The Spider EX models also have a new co-molded Pure Roll 2 TPU insert that uses silver aluminum beams at a 45°-angle to produce true roll and improved feel. To make aiming your putts easier, three alignment dots between two rails form a pattern easily tracked by the eye within the White True Path alignment system’s Y-shape.

TaylorMade Spider S Putter

TaylorMade’s Spider S putters also feature a multi-material construction but are done differently than the EX model. This design uses a high-grade 6061 aluminum body with a tungsten sole and rear weight bar to put more weight where you need it. The tungsten rear weight bar is specific to each putter length to fine-tune head weight and MOI to each model. The tungsten sole weights in the front perimeter of the club head add stability also specific to each putter length. A signature TPU Pure Roll insert feels softer and encourages optimal forward roll with grooves set at a 45° angle.

TaylorMade Spider SR Putter

The TaylorMade Spider SR model is similar to the Spider S, but instead of a rear weight bar, they utilize a fanged-mallet shape. The signature Pure Roll insert is also made of Surlyn to provide a different feel than the TPU material used in the Spider S. Between the fangs of the club head and the perimeter weighting, TaylorMade included their White True Path alignment system to form an arrow exactly the width of the ball on top to center the golf ball.

TaylorMade Spider X Putter

Finally, the TaylorMade Spider X putter continues the tradition of previous Spider X models with its multi-material construction and streamlined head shape. A heavy steel frame combines with aluminum and steel back weights and a lightweight composite sole for maximum MOI and forgiveness. They also utilize the White True Path alignment system and soft TPU Pure Roll insert. These putters have a unique look because they are not painted. Instead, they are blasted with high-pressure water to leave a smooth, silvery aluminum finish.

Performance

To test out the TaylorMade 2021 Spider putters, we enlisted the help of Rick Hatfield, Rick is the head golf pro at Flint Hills National Golf Club and TGW’s resident product expert. Rick noted that each putter lined up easily to the target. The True Path system is definitely a winner. TaylorMade’s Pure Roll insert was also a hit during our testing. Rick complimented the soft yet responsive feel that allowed him to control his putts while benefiting from a soft-feeling putter. Rick also said the multi-material construction in these putters kept them very stable and forgiving on every putt.
