TaylorMade P790 UDI Review – New SpeedFoam Air Takes Your Long Game Further

TaylorMade boasts a reputation of being a go-to golf club maker for players who like their long irons. Their Ultimate Driving Iron, or UDI, designs are a popular choice among golfers who like the workability and looks of a long iron while benefiting from more distance and forgiveness. For the 2021 P790 UDI model, TaylorMade utilizes their newest SpeedFoam technology with SpeedFoam Air, added more tungsten weight to boost forgiveness, and created an even thinner face for more speed and flexibility. TGW’s review team gives you an exclusive look inside the technology and performance with our video and review.

Technology

TaylorMade’s newly engineered SpeedFoam Air is 69% lighter than previous versions, saving up to 3.5 grams of weight to further optimize the mass for an even better launch. The new formula also provides an improved, pleasing sound and solid feel when paired with the faster, thinner, more flexible club face.

The 2021 P790 UDI features an incredibly thin club head made from 8620 carbon steel, allowing for a super-low center of gravity and offering a soft yet solid feel. A forged 4141 steel L-face is just 1.65mm thick for extreme flexibility, fast ball speeds, and distance with a premium forged feel.

The P790 UDI’s new thinner body construction allows TaylorMade to move more weight around to make these irons more stable and forgiving. They placed 22 grams of tungsten in the toe to create a massive amount of stability and forgiveness that is rarely, if ever, seen in hybrid iron like this.

Finally, TaylorMade included their signature thru-slot Speed Pocket on the sole. This unique cut through the sole increases the flexibility of the club face while maintaining speed and distance, especially on shots hit low on the face.

Performance

To test the performance of the TaylorMade P790 UDI, we enlisted the help of Rick Hatfield. Rick is the TGW’s Master Fitter and resident product expert. The club tested was a 2 iron with a loft of 17°. Rick’s average swing speed during this test was 88 mph which produced an average ball speed of 130 mph. This golf club produced a low, penetrating flight with an average launch angle of 11° and an appropriate spin rate of 3.489 rpm. All together, RIck’s average carry distance with the P790 UDI was 201 yards.

Who It’s For

The TaylorMade P790 UDI is best fit for skilled golfers in the lower handicap range. The thin blade design fits the look that better golfers prefer, inspiring confidence that they can control and work the shot they need every time on the golf course. Players who want a compact hybrid iron but are not willing to sacrifice speed, stability, and feel to get extra distance and forgiveness will love the new P790 UDI.

Appearance

The TaylorMade P790 UDI is thin and compact at address, a shape fit for the player’s category. Made like a traditional blade long iron, these golf clubs look the part of a workable, versatile option in the long game. The thin topline and sole with minimal offset fit the mold of a Tour-style iron.

Feel & Sound

The TaylorMade P790 UDI produces a pleasing sound with a soft feel thanks to the combination of a forged face, carbon body, and SpeedFoam Air injection. Golfers will be happy with both aspects of these golf clubs as they fit perfectly with what they expect from a club like this.
