Srixon ZX5 Irons Review
Technology
Srixon ZX5 irons feature a new technology it is calling MainFrame. MainFrame is a variable thickness pattern on the back of the club face using a series of grooves, channels, and cavities milled into it. The pattern used was chosen from a series of thousands of computer simulations until Srixon found the one that best-optimized speed all over the face. The result is maximum speed and powerful distance on every shot, no matter where you make contact.
These irons are forged but also feature a multi-piece construction. The forged SUP10 face is incredibly strong and light, allowing for a thinner, more flexible face that enhances speed and distance at impact. Then the body of the club head is forged from 1020 carbon steel for a softer feel and less vibration. The long and mid irons also feature tungsten weight in the toe for added stability where you need it.
Srixon included their signature Tour V.T. sole design in the ZX5 irons as well. This shape allows the club to get in and out of the turf easily for great feel and control. There are also notches in the heel and toe of the sole that allows players to work their shots without losing any forgiveness.
Finally, Srixon optimized the ZX5 irons all the way through the set with progressive grooves. Consistency is key to make sure your distance and spin performance are where they need to be. The 3-iron through 7-iron has wider grooves that are ideal for the distance you need. The 8-iron through pitching wedge has deeper, narrower grooves that cut through grass and debris on approach shots for maximum spin where you need it.
Performance
To test the performance of the Srixon ZX5 irons, we enlisted the help of Rick Hatfield, head golf pro at Flint Hills National Golf Club and TGW’s resident product expert. We used the 7-iron for our test which Rick swings at an average of 83 mph. With the 7-iron, Rick was producing an average ball speed of 112.8 mph and launch of 19.5° with an average spin rate of 5,022 rpm. That all added up to an average carry distance of 162.5 yards which was impressive for the club head speed. These irons are also launched higher than previous versions.
Who It’s For
Srixon ZX5 irons are for golfers who are looking for explosive distance, forgiveness, and a soft, forged feel. If you are a player who needs some forgiveness but does not want to sacrifice feel or workability in order to get it, the ZX5 irons may be the best fit for you with their combination of speed, cavity back shape, and forged construction.
Appearance
The Srixon ZX5 irons have a unique look in the bag thanks to the angular cavity design. However, at address, these irons set up incredibly clean and traditional. The blade is a little longer and the sole is a little thicker when compared to its ZX7 counterpart.
Feel & Sound
The Srixon ZX5 irons feel explosive at impact while also preserving that soft, forged feel Srixon golfers love. They glide through the turf easily so every swing feels smooth. With a forged 1020 carbon steel body, all those unwanted vibrations go away for a buttery soft feel and pleasing sound when you hit the golf ball.
