Srixon ZX5 Driver Review: Explosive Speed with Boosted Forgiveness

Srixon ZX drivers are built with the same goal in mind as their newest irons: speed. These golf clubs are designed to maximize distance for all players and to boost your play even during competition. Everything within the design of the ZX5 driver is concentrated on producing power at impact so you can hit the ball farther and more accurately off the tee. Read TGW’s review to learn all about that technology and see them in action in our exclusive video.

Technology

The Srixon ZX5 driver has a new key technology called Rebound Frame. Based on the law of physics that says energy can neither be created nor destroyed, Srixon set out to focus that energy in the most efficient way possible. Rebound Frame is more than just a new face design. It consists of alternating flexible and rigid zones, starting with the face, to create more speed and transfer more energy into the golf ball. The face is considered the first flex zone which is then surrounded by a stiffened perimeter. Then a layer of flexible material separates the inner rib structure to create the final two layers.

In place of a metal crown, Srixon uses a carbon fiber weave that is 15% larger than what was used in previous driver models. This allows more mass to be moved low, deep, and around the perimeter of the club head in order to increase the MOI rating of the driver and create more forgiveness.

Finally, the ZX5 driver features a flattened shape and larger footprint with a single sole weight placed low and deep in the head for high launch and longer carry distance.

Performance

To test the performance of the Srixon ZX5 driver, we turned to Rick Hatfield, head golf pro at Flint Hills National Golf Club and TGW’s resident product expert. Rick’s average club head speed was up a little bit with the ZX5 at 100.6 mph. With that swing, we noted an average ball speed of 144.4 mph and a slightly higher spin at 2,800 rpm. All totaled, with those metrics and the technology, Rick hit the ZX5 driver an average carry distance of 244 yards.

Who It’s For

The Srixon ZX5 driver is the best fit for the golfer who wants to hit the ball high and straight with plenty of forgiveness. Golfers who need help generating high launch in order to more carry distance will benefit the most from the ZX5 design.

Appearance

The Srixon ZX5 driver features a Tour-inspired shape in an extremely forgiving design. It is built with a more rounded crown and a shorter skirt on the back of the club head. The rear of the club head has a more triangular shape at address.

Feel & Sound

The sound of the Srixon ZX5 driver is best described as explosive. Our tester noted that this is one of the louder drivers he hit this year, but also said he didn’t mind because that sound and powerful feel gave him the feedback that let him know he was hitting longer drives.

On the adjustable shaft of my ZX5 driver there are four loft markings Std Loft, -1 Loft, +1 Loft, and Std FL. I know what the first three settings are but would like to know what FL loft is. Thank you. By the way I am loving my ZX metals, hybrids, and ZX5 irons.

The STD FL setting stands for Standard Flat. This setting keeps the loft of the club standard but flattens the lie angle.
