Srixon Q-Star Tour 3 Golf Ball Review by TGW
Technology
The Srixon Q-Star Tour 3 golf ball is a 3-piece ball that starts with Srixon’s FastLayer core. The FastLayer core starts soft in the center and gradually becomes firmer around the edges for exceptional feel with plenty of ball speed for maximum distance without firming up the feel of the ball. Srixon’s core in the Q-Star Tour 3 golf ball is the largest in its class so it provides the distance and short game spin of a Tour ball with a softer feel than ever before.
Srixon uses a premium urethane cover on both golf balls for pinpoint control around the greens. Both covers feature Srixon’s signature Spin Skin coating with SeRM. This durable coating digs deep into the grooves of your wedges and irons to dramatically increase spin for more control and stopping power on pitches and chips. SeRM makes the cover more malleable, allowing the molecules to slide and stretch on impact without breaking, giving your clubs more bite.
Finally, for the 3rd generation of the Q-Star Tour, Srixon utilized their 338 Speed Dimple Pattern. Deeper dimples punch through the air for a more penetrating launch, reducing drag and increasing lift to boost overall distance and produce straighter flight, even in the toughest wind.
Performance
We tested the performance of the Srixon Q-Star Tour 3 golf ball with the help of Rick Hatfield. Rick is TGW’s master fitter and product expert. Our test consisted of hitting these golf balls with three different shots: a three-quarter wedge shot with a 54° wedge, a 7-iron, and a driver.
Starting with the wedge, Rick tested them with a three-quarter shot to get an idea of the control this ball provides. His average spin was between 6,100 and 6,300 rpm with a descent angle of around 40°. That much spin at a descent of that degree is sure to help you hit and hold the green when you need it.
Next, Rick hit the Q-Star Tour 3 with a 7-iron. His average ball speed was 112 mph, which is normal for Rick with a 7-iron. He did note a reduced spin in this test with an average spin rate of right around 4,000 rpm. With a piercing trajectory and soft feel, Rick’s average carry distance was 162-165 yards.
Finally, we tested this golf ball with the driver. Rick’s average swing speed during this test was 97-99 mph. His average ball speed was between 142 and 144 mph with an extremely low spin rate of less than 2,000 rpm off the tee. Rick’s average carry distance with the Q-Star Tour 3 was right at 240 yards but with a penetrating trajectory and shallow landing angle, he gained plenty of distance in roll-out.
