M6 Irons Review
Technology
TaylorMade introduced the new M5 and M6 irons with a revolutionary new design they call Speed Bridge. This brand new structure is the newest technology from TaylorMade to help you hit your irons farther with faster speed.
The Speed Bridge structure on the back of the club head connects the sole to the topline to enhance ball speed and improve sound and feel all at the same time. By making the head structure stiffer, you lose less energy at impact which produces higher ball speeds. Speed Bridge also allows for a flexible, unsupported club face as well as a through-slot Speed Pocket to generate even more speed. Finally, by reinforcing the top of the club head, it eliminates those harsh vibrations for more soft and solid feel, creating a more soft, solid feeling game improvement iron.
Who It’s For
The TaylorMade M5 irons are players distance irons. They feature a more compact head shape, crisp sound and feel, and more control and workability. For the golfer who wants distance with some forgiveness but prefers a smaller profile and wants to control their ball flight, the M5 irons are the best option.
TaylorMade M6 irons are ideal for golfers who are looking to improve their game through distance and forgiveness. They are pure game improvement irons for the golfer who wants to aim, swing, and see results. Loaded with TaylorMade’s distance and forgiveness technologies, these are the irons for golfers trying to get the most out of every single swing.
Performance
When testing the TaylorMade M5 and M6 irons, we compared them to the M3 and M4 models. With the M5 irons, we saw an increase of 2-3mph in ball speed which equates to about a half a club’s worth of distance. We saw consistent spin and stopping power with an ideal trajectory. These clubs went farther and still had the ability to hold a green so we saw distance benefits without losing any stopping power.
With the M6 irons, we saw some fun results. We saw about a 4.5 mph increase in ball speed in the 7 iron, which led to an increase in about 10 yards. That gave us the ability to hit one less club into the green which means fewer strokes and better scores. The deep and low center of gravity also produced higher launch with a good landing angle to hold its landing spot.
Appearance
The TaylorMade M5 and M6 irons both have a bit of a unique look thanks to the Speed Bridge structure on the back. This connecting bridge between the topline and sole of the club leaves the face unsupported and looks like something you don’t seen often on the golf course. At address, you do not notice it. The M5 irons are more compact than the M6 while the M6 irons feature a wider sole designed to help get the ball in the air easier.
Feel & Sound
The TaylorMade M5 and M6 irons produced similar sound and feel due to similar technologies and design elements used in both irons. Both the sound and feel were crisp and pleasing, letting you know when you made good contact with the golf ball. Both clubs were forgiving when shots were not hit dead center so those swings did not punish the hands.
