PING Sigma 2 Putters Bring Customization To A New Level

The second generation of PING Sigma putters have arrived. PING’s Sigma 2 line ushers in a new era of putter technology. In the exclusive video above, you can see our review about all the features that have the golf world excited.

In addition to trying out these clubs on the course, we also interviewed Dr. Paul Wood, PING’s VP of Engineering. With the help of Dr. Wood, we identified three key features  that make the Sigma 2 putters unique: adjustable length technology, the Pebax face insert, and nine distinct head shapes.

  1. Adjustable Length Technology

While PING has created  adjustable length putters before, the designs have come a long way. In the old adjustable putters, the mechanism was located below the grip, making it distracting and bulky. With the Sigma 2 putters, the adjustable mechanism is all hidden inside the grip. Attach any torque wrench to the adjustable slot on the top of the putter and turn. One full turn adjusts the length by approximately a quarter of an inch. Each putter can be adjusted as short as 32” or as long as 36”.

“We know that length is incredibly important. In our study, we found that 8 out of 10 golfers will adjust length. Just by getting to a comfortable length, we saw a 25% improvement in distance control,” Dr. Wood told us.

  1. Two-Piece Pebax Face

The original Sigma G putters featured a milled aluminum face with TR grooves that were laid over a Pebax elastomer insert. “True Roll grooves are very precisely machined in. [With Sigma 2] , we figured out how to get the True Roll grooves on the Pebax insert ,” said Dr. Wood.

PING wanted to use a material that could provide quiet and soft sound without losing feel. That made Pebax the perfect option according to Dr. Wood. “Pebax is soft and it doesn’t eat energy,” he said.

To fine-tune the performance of this all-Pebax face insert, they designed it in two layers, each with its own type of the material. The outer black layer, the part that you actually make contact with, is softer like a pencil eraser with the TR grooves milled onto it. A blue layer sits behind that and is firmer, like the tread on a tire, to prevent the face from being too soft. It all works together to provide soft feel with a lively response on putts of all distances.

  1. Nine Head Shapes to Choose From

From face-balanced to toe hang, from blades to mallets, the PING Sigma 2 line has a putter to match the preferences of every golfer. This line includes the signature Anser blade as well as the popular Tyne and Tyne 4 mallets. There are some interesting new models as well, such as the Fetch. The Fetch is a mallet with a hole in the center that is the exact size of a golf ball. It allows you to pick up your golf ball or take it out of the cup without bending down by just setting that opening over your golf ball and liting up! The ZB 2 blade takes the classic ZB shape and makes it the same width as the Anser, increasing the stability of the putter with more weight in the heel and toe. But that’s just a sample of what the PING Sigma 2 family of putters has to offer. Check out the whole collection on TGW.com because you’re sure to find something that fits your putting stroke and preferred look!
