PING knows that golfers are constantly searching for consistent performance they can trust swing after swing. That was their mission when they created the new PING i59 irons, a design that is different at its very core. Read on as TGW’s review team takes you inside the latest technology and gives you an exclusive look at the i59 irons in action with our video review.
PING i59 Irons Review by TGW
Technology
PING i59 irons are made with a unique three-piece forged construction. Each club head begins with a 1025 carbon steel body. As golfers know, carbon steel is what provides a soft, pleasing feel to forged irons. Inside is an aerospace-grade aluminum core that is one-third the density of stainless steel and saves 30 grams of material that is repositioned to boost forgiveness and control. Then they cap it off with a 17-4 stainless steel laser-cut face. This unique face design ensures greater control over trajectory and precision for shot-making where you need it.
PING’s new AlumiCore Technology sets the i59 irons apart from the rest of the golf clubs in its class. This lighter core frees up more weight to be moved around. That movable weight takes the form of tungsten weights in the toe and the heel, creating an uncommon level of forgiveness for a forged iron. Despite being smaller than the i210 irons, the i59 design has the same MOI rating thanks to this perimeter weighting. AlumiCore Technology also contributes to the stable, solid feel when you hit the golf ball.
Finally, the fully machined face features new MicroMax grooves. These grooves combine steeper sidewalls with tighter spacing in order to fit four extra grooves on each club face. Those extra grooves help reduce fliers in the short irons while helping preserve spin in the long irons.
Performance
To test the PING i59 irons, we took them to Rick Hatfield, TGW’s Master Fitter and product expert. For our test, Rick hit the 7-iron which has a loft of 34° and his average swing speed as 83 mph. His average ball speed was 111.3 mph which is on the high end for an iron of this type. He saw a nice, high launch at an average of 20.3° and produced an average of 5,099 rpm of spin. That type of spin will allow you to hold the green from your 7-iron distance with ease. Rick’s average carry distance with the i59 iron was 160 yards.
Who It’s For
PING i59 irons are compact players’ irons designed for skilled shot-makers. Lower handicap golfers who want maximum control and precision will enjoy this golf club design. Those players will also enjoy a little added forgiveness which everyone can benefit from.
Appearance
The PING i59 irons feature players’ iron shape preferred by Tour players and highly-skilled golfers. Their compact shape looks great with PING’s signature Hydropearl 2.0 finish that not only helps reduce glare and looks great but also repels water for enhanced performance.
Feel & Sound
PING i59 irons feel extremely soft at impact, exactly what golfers who prefer a forged blade iron expect from their golf clubs. Turf interaction with smooth, leaving sharp, clean divots. The sound is pleasing as well.
