Technology

The heart of the PING i230 irons is a five-piece, multi-material construction. It starts with a 431 stainless steel body for a strong, stable base. Tungsten weights in the toe and tip of the shaft increase perimeter weighting for even more stability and forgiveness. A concealed elastomer insert in the back of the club head dampens vibrations for a more pleasing feel and sound on impact. The multi-part cavity badge ties it all together with a sleek look at address.
The elastomer insert is one-eighth the density of stainless steel. This frees up 21 grams of discretionary weight that PING’s engineers moved elsewhere in the club head to lower the center of gravity and improve launch while increasing MOI for greater forgiveness.
Every club face features PING’s signature MicroMax Grooves. The fully machined face and grooves on the i230 irons provide more consistent launch and spin in the long irons while giving you more control in the short irons. This design also helps these irons retain more of their spin in wet conditions so you don’t lose the bite in your scoring clubs on a rainy day or dewy morning.
They also rounded off the leading edge of each iron to create ample bounce and smooth turf interaction from all types of lies. You can hit every shot with confidence without worrying about digging into the ground as you hit the golf ball.
Even the length of these blades is inspired by Tour-preferred performance. The i230 irons are more compact in the 3 through 5 irons than the previous i210 model. The middle and short irons remain the same length as the prior generation i-Series irons.

Performance

We put the PING i230 irons to the test at the TGW Pure Performance Center with the help of Rick Hatfield. Rick is TGW’s Master Fitter and resident product expert. For this test, Rick used the PING i230 7 iron. His average swing speed was 85 mph.

Rick produced an average ball speed of 114 mph with the PING i230 irons which he noted was impressive for a club of this category. His average launch angle was 18° and he produced an average spin rate of 5,300 rpm. All together, Rick averaged 165 yards of carry distance with the 7 iron. This average distance represented an increase of about a half-club for Rick when compared to the previous model, the PING i210 irons.

Who It’s For

PING i230 irons are a great choice for lower to low-mid handicap players who put a premium on feel and workability. As blade irons, they tend to offer more control over creating your preferred shot shape. The i230 irons have also been enhanced for higher MOI and great forgiveness to be more playable for a wider range of golfers.
If you are a golfer looking for more forgiveness and distance in a game-improvement package, check out the PING G425 irons. These golf clubs are loaded with power and forgiveness to help make golf easier and more fun. Thanks to re-engineered Variable Face Thickness design, the G425 irons perform more like a metalwood with greater flex, higher ball speed, higher launch, and greater stopping power
