PING G425 Irons Review by TGW
Technology
The PING G425 irons are vastly different from previous iron models and it starts with the club face. These irons feature a metalwood style face with PING’s Variable Face Thickness design. This design increases the flexibility of the face to increase ball speed and launch shots higher for more stopping power on the green.
PING then included a tungsten toe screw and hosel weight to expand perimeter weighting. This added weight in the extreme perimeter of the club head making these irons more stable and forgiving, especially on off-center shots. This weight is also loaded into a more compact clubhead, shorter from heel-to-toe than previous G-model irons.
There is also a new cavity badge on the G425 irons. This three-piece, multi-material cavity back covers more of the backside of the club face to dampen even more unwanted vibrations. A combination of aluminum, ABS material, and damping tape provides a softer feel and more pure sound with every strike.
Finally, PING included their signature hydropearl chrome finish on these golf clubs. This finish helps repel water, keeping the club face clear of debris for clean contact on every swing.
Performance
We tested the performance of the PING G425 irons with the help of Rick Hatfield, head golf pro at Flint Hills National Golf Club and TGW’s resident product expert. Rick used the 7-iron with a True Temper Dynamic Gold 120 steel shaft in stiff flex. His average swing speed with this club is 82-85 mph. Rick averaged 113.8 mph of ball speed to go along with an average spin rate of 4,871 rpm. The launch and height of these irons are notable. Rick launched the 7-iron at an average of 19.4° with a maximum height of 93 feet and a landing angle of just more than 45°. That means plenty of stopping power to hold more greens. All together, Rick averaged 163 yards of carry distance with the 7-iron.
Who It’s For
PING G425 irons are made for golfers who want more distance but still need the ability to hold the green. These golf clubs are also loaded with forgiveness so they are well-suited for the eye of the game improvement golfer or someone who doesn’t mind the look of a little bit larger club head.
Appearance
The PING G425 irons look more compact since they are shorter from heel-to-toe versus previous G-series irons. They look clean at address with a streamlined shape that is designed to inspire confidence down by the ball. The hydropearl chrome finish looks great as well and reduces glare.
Feel & Sound
The PING G425 irons feel very responsive when striking the golf ball. It has a hollow, powerful feel kind of like a metalwood thanks to the VFT face design. These golf clubs also have a sharp, crisp sound.
