PING G425 Drivers Reviewed: Speed and Forgiveness For Every Golfer

The new PING G425 driver series has something for every golfer. It all begins with the Max model that takes the moment of inertia to all-new levels, creating PING’s most forgiving driver ever. There are two more signature models in the G425 family as well. PING made an LST (Low Spin Technology) version to reduce spin and increase distance as well as an SFT (Straight Flight Technology) model for those golfers who need more draw bias. Learn all about the latest technology and see them in action in TGW’s exclusive review.

Technology

The PING G425 drivers all share some core technologies. We will start with those before diving into what makes each model unique. All of the G425 drivers have a T9S+ forged face. This material is thin and strong, allowing for accelerated flexing and more speed. PING also included their signature crown turbulators that help reduce aerodynamic drag for faster swing speeds through less resistance. Dragonfly Technology in the crown frees up weight to be moved elsewhere, allowing each model to have its own unique weighting.

The PING G425 Max driver features a 26-gram tungsten weight that can be moved into three different positions: draw, neutral, or fade. This weight makes the PING G425 Max the most forgiving driver PING has ever made with a record MOI rating of 10,000 points.

Next, the PING G425 LST driver features a lighter, 17-gram tungsten weight that can be placed in the same three positions. This driver also features a more compact, pear-shaped 445cc club head that helps reduce spin for greater distance.

Finally, the PING G425 SFT driver has a fixed 23-gram tungsten weight in the heel portion of the club head. This precisely-positioned back weight helps create more draw bias so golfers who struggle with a slice can find the fairway more consistently.

Performance

We tested the performance of the PING G425 drivers with the help of Rick Hatfield. Rick is the head golf pro at Flint Hills National Golf Club and TGW’s resident product expert.

Testing began with the G425 Max driver. Rick used the 9° driver for this test. With this golf club, Rick had an average swing speed of 98 mph which is right at his normal range. He achieved an average ball speed of 146.6 mph and an average spin rate of 2,838 rpm. Overall, Rick averaged 242 yards of carry distance with remarkable consistency in those numbers from shot to shot.

Next up was the G425 LST driver. Again, Rick used the 9° driver. His average swing speed was right around 100 mph with an average ball speed of 146.1 mph. While those numbers were consistent with the G425 Max, the biggest difference came in the spin rate. Rick’s average spin with the LST model was 2,659 rpm, a reduction of nearly 200 rpm on average. In the end, he averaged 243 yards of carry distance but achieved more roll with less spin and a lower trajectory.

We concluded our test with the G425 SFT driver. For this test, Rick used the 10.5° driver as it is not available in a 9° model. His average swing speed with this club was 99-100 mph with an average ball speed of 143.6 mph. Rick’s spin rate was a bit higher with an average of 2,965 rpm. He averaged a carry distance of 226 yards. The important performance factor here was the slice correction. Rick stated this was the most anti-right driver he has ever hit with an average of 30 yards of correction to the left.

Who It’s For

The PING G425 Max driver is designed for golfers who want to straighten out their drives. This model is loaded with forgiveness and a movable weight that allows you to change the setup to correct any type of miss. For golfers who want maximum forgiveness, the G425 Max driver is the best choice.

PING’s G425 LST driver is made for golfers who want the forgiveness the G425 technology provides but also want to bring their spin down. Players who are looking to bring their trajectory off the tee down some or want to increase the rollout of their drives will benefit from the Low Spin Technology model.

The PING G425 SFT driver is designed to eliminate your miss to the right. Golfers who struggle with a slice will find plenty of draw bias in this model to help straighten out your shots and find the fairway more often.

Appearance

The PING G425 drivers look sleek at address. During testing, Rick described them as a classic PING driver. There are no distractions, just a solid, clean look down by the ball that lets you focus on making the best possible swing off the tee.

Feel & Sound

The sound of the PING G425 drivers is best described as resonating. These golf clubs produce a solid, loud sound that will certainly grab your playing partners’ attention. The feel of these drivers is quite unique. As Rick described it during testing, the face feels almost paper-thin. You can actually feel it flexing on the G425 drivers more than you would on most other clubs.

I would like to buy the G425 SFT driver, but I need a senior shaft. Is it available?

Thanks for your question! The PING G425 SFT driver does have a senior flex shaft option available. PING commonly refers to senior flex as soft regular flex so that is the option you would choose at this link: https://www.tgw.com/ping-mens-g425-sft-driver

I sent you a message asking about the SFT, but I think the LST is best for me. I am 77 and need senior shaft. Is it available?

Thanks for your question! The PING G425 LST driver does have some senior flex shaft options available. These are custom options and are available by using the Enter Custom Specs tab located above the photo of the club at this link: https://www.tgw.com/ping-mens-g425-lst-driver

For a hook, we would recommend the G425 MAX model with the weight moved to the fade-biased position.

Bought the G425 SFT model because I struggle with a slice, but with the loft a 10.5 the ball flight is way too high. Will the MAX driver set at 9* and the weight set for draw bias be a better option?

If you find your ball flight is too high and the golf ball is ballooning, causing you to lose distance, we do recommend lowering the loft to bring that flight down.

I have the Ping 410 with a stiff shaft. If I get the new 425, should I go with the G425 LST with the same stiff shaft? I generall draw the ball.
