Technology
The PING ChipR is investment cast from 431 stainless steel in a compact club head shape that is designed to inspire confidence when addressing the golf ball. Perimeter weighting in a club head like this features high MOI for greater stability and forgiveness on those short game shots. A composite cavity badge in the back of the club head helps fine-tune feel and sound for a pleasing experience chipping around the greens.
PING’s MicroMax grooves are included on the club face to help control spin on chips of all distances. The face itself is shallower as well, between that of a wedge and a putter. A cambered sole provides versatility on all types of lies so you can confidently make a good chip from the rough or off the fringe.
This unique golf club is designed for shots within 40 yards of the green from the rough or fringe. Golfers apply a putting-like stroke to achieve distance control and consistency without fear of chunking or blading their shots.
Performance
We put the PING ChipR to the test with the help of Rick Hatfield, TGW’s Master Fitter and resident product expert. Rick notes that he sometimes struggles around the greens with shorter chips when he uses a wedge with more loft, so trying out this option was intriguing. His ball flight was lower which is to be expected with a lower loft. The ChipR is lofted similar to a 9 iron. Rick’s shots ended closer to the hole with the ball checking up a couple of times and then rolling out like you would expect a putt to.
Who It’s For
Golfers who lack confidence with their traditional wedge and frequently struggle with their chip shots around the green will want to put a PING ChipR in their bag. If you need help making clean contact and could use some added forgiveness then this is the golf club for you.
