This year, Mizuno introduced the T20 wedges and the MP-20 irons. These new golf wedges feature loft-specific grooves, longer-lasting grooves thanks to a more durable material and a new feature that keeps these clubs performing their best in all conditions. Mizuno T20 Wedges Review
TGW: It has been a little while since we’ve seen a new T-series golf wedge from Mizuno. Can you explain the timing?
Chris Voshall: We wanted to hold off to align the T20 wedges to match the MP-20 irons. These two families fit the same golfers so we wanted them to be available together. In the past, the T-series wedges have released along with the JPX irons so we wanted to align those better.
TGW: So what is new in the Mizuno T20 wedges that we haven’t seen before?
CV: Well, our goal was to make these wedges more consistent in every condition. The answer was in the new Hydroflow Micro Grooves. Think of it as the tread on a tire. These vertical channels between the grooves allow moisture to travel up the face instead of getting trapped between the ball and the club face for better performance, especially in wet conditions.
We also adjusted the first scoreline on the face. There’s now a partial groove on the bottom of the face to eliminate that uneven gap and the large open area near the leading edge. This helps boost spin on shots hit low on the face.
TGW: How does Mizuno match their Quad Cut Grooves to each loft for optimal performance?
CV: We use narrower, deeper grooves on stronger lofts where you are more likely to hit full shots and wider, shallower grooves on weaker lofts where you are more likely to hit partial shots around the green. There is also a flat face milling pattern that increases spin on partial shots.
TGW: And you also use a different material to make these grooves more durable?
CV: That’s right, T20 is the third Mizuno wedge to use 1025 Boron to provide longer groove life and more consistent spin throughout the life of the wedge.
