Technology

Mizuno ST-X 220 Fairway Wood face

Mizuno’s ST-X 220 fairway wood begins with their signature CORTECH club face. The multi-thickness CORTECH face boosts ball speed near the legal limit all over the club face. The 5 and 7 woods feature a face made from MAS1C maraging steel so the face is stronger and more flexible to allow for an overall thinner construction.

The 3 wood utilizes a SAT2041 Beta Titanium face to provide a higher COR in the center and low areas on the face for faster ball speeds. A Ti811 body in the 3 wood uses incremental discretionary weight for extremely low and deep internal weighting for easy, high launch and a slight draw bias.

Mizuno also included their signature Wave sole design. The re-engineered, lighter sole design features a more compact Wave structure that is more forgiving and faster on shots hit low on the face.

The ultra-thin lightweight waffle carbon crown helps create a lower center of gravity and generates a higher launch.

Performance

We tested the Mizuno ST-X 220 fairway wood with the help of Rick Hatfield. Rick is TGW’s Master Fitter and our resident product expert. Our golf club testing was conducted indoors at the TGW Pure Performance Center using Foresight Sports launch monitors.

Rick’s average swing speed during this test was 98.5 mph on his way to recording an average ball speed of 136.6 mph. He hit the 3 wood with a loft of 15°, producing an average launch angle of 14.4°. Rick’s average spin rate of 3,499 rpm, good for an average carry distance of 219 yards with about 22 yards of draw bias.
