Mizuno ST-X 220 Driver Review by TGW
Technology
Mizuno’s ST-X 220 driver features a high-strength face that is more flexible and features a fine-grain structure to hold up for strong, powerful distance. The multi-thickness CORTECH face boosts ball speed near the legal limit all over the club face. Made from beta titanium, the face is stronger and more flexible to allow for an overall thinner face and more spring-back for explosive impact.
A new stainless steel weight below the sole surface is placed in the extreme rear and center of the head to deliver a huge boost in forgiveness without sacrificing spin performance.
The center of gravity is located further back in the head along the X-axis for a mild amount of draw bias. Its 460cc head volume is pushed slightly lower to the ground for higher launch and mid-spin, lining up square to slightly closed for a game improvement profile.
Performance
We tested the Mizuno ST-X 220 driver with the help of Rick Hatfield. Rick is TGW’s Master Fitter and our resident product expert. Our golf driver testing was conducted indoors at the TGW Pure Performance Center using Foresight Sports launch monitors.
Rick’s average swing speed during this test was 102 mph, good for an average ball speed of 145 mph. Using the 10.5° option, his average launch angle was 14° and Rick recorded an average spin rate of 2,747 rpm. With a high trajectory, Rick averaged 240 yards of carry distance along with 27 yards of left bias so there is plenty of draw built into the ST-X 220 driver to help correct a slice.
Who It’s For
The Mizuno ST-X 220 driver is the game-improvement model. It features a head shape that is pushed lower to the ground for a higher launch with some draw bias. At address, this driver sets up square to slightly closed in the standard setting, preferred by higher handicap players.
Appearance
The Mizuno ST-X 220 driver has a glossy black finish that offers a traditional look both in the bag and set up behind the golf ball. It is not flashy, but rather a simple, powerful design to inspire confidence.
Feel & Sound
Like all of Mizuno’s golf clubs, the ST-X 220 driver feels and sounds outstanding when you hit the golf ball with a pleasing, responsive performance.
