Mizuno Pro 223 Irons Review by TGW
Technology
The Mizuno Pro 223 irons are made at the iconic facility in Hiroshima using Mizuno’s signature Grain Flow Forged HD (High Density) process. This set uses a combination of constructions to deliver the performance necessary with each club. The 4 through 7 irons are made from forged Chromoly material with a flow micro-slot for distance and forgiveness where you need it. The 8 iron through pitching wedge are made from a single billet of 1025E mild carbon steel for precision and control where you want it.
In order to accommodate the micro-slot in the 4 through 7 irons and still provide the Tour-authentic sole these irons require, the back edge is heavily beveled so the Pro 223 irons play exactly how you need them.
Mizuno’s Pro 223 irons feature a nickel chrome finish for a classic look. These irons are also smaller than their MP-20 MMC predecessor.
Performance
We put the Mizuno Pro 223 irons to the test with the help of TGW’s Master Fitter and product expert, Rick Hatfield. Our test was conducted using a 7 iron and Rick’s average swing speed was 83.9 mph. His average ball speed was 113 mph which is quite high for an iron of this size. Rick’s average launch angle was 18.1° and his average spin rate came in at 5,592 rpm. All told, his average carry distance with the Pro 223 7 iron was 162 yards.
Who It’s For
The Mizuno Pro 223 irons are built for distance but sized for Tour. Featuring the size and shape of a traditional blade, these irons feature a cavity back and internal technology to boost distance as well as a little bit stronger lofts. These irons would be considered player’s distance irons.
Appearance
Mizuno Pro 223 irons are compact and smaller than the previous MP-20 MMC irons that came before them. They are noticeably smaller in the scoring irons. A nickel chrome finish provides a premium, classic appearance down by the golf ball.
Feel & Sound
The feel and sound of the Mizuno Pro 223 irons are distinctly Mizuno. They are soft and responsive with a pleasing sound engineered through extensive research. Under the finish of these clubs, Mizuno includes a soft copper underlay that makes them feel even better when you hit the golf ball.
