The Mizuno MP-20 family of irons is here to transform the MP line for a new generation. Mizuno designed these new irons with custom set makeups in mind. Golfers are encouraged to mix and match the different models to create a combo set that fits their game all the way through the bag. There are three models available: MP-20 MB, MP-20 MMC, and MP-20 HMB. Each model focuses on a key difference between short irons, mid irons, and long irons. To see them in action, watch our exclusive video reviews and then read our Q & A with Mizuno’s Chris Voshall to get the inside story.

TGW: How does Mizuno’s “family” approach to these irons change the way we think about golf club performance?
Chris Voshall: We took custom in mind with MP-18 to create a family of clubs golfers can mix and match to create the perfect set. So with the MP-20 irons, we created a difference between the three models with short irons, mid irons, and long irons, to create more separation to make creating that combo set easier.
TGW: Tell us about the MP-20 irons and “layers of feel”.
CV: As we went through testing these new irons, we brought back the concept of a copper underlay. In a blind test, nearly every player said the iron with the copper underlay had a softer feel. So we included that layer in each of the three models. The MP-20 irons have a layer of copper sandwiched between two layers of nickel to make them even softer.
TGW: Let’s start with the MP-20 MB irons. How did you develop these new muscle backs?
CV: We did a lot of testing with our Tour players and Mizuno iron players on tour that are not contracted with us. These are the ultimate Tour blade, a pure muscle back. We tapered the blade, giving it that muscle back look with channel back feel. They are still made from 1025E mild carbon steel with our Grain Flow Forged HD process.
One of the most frequent requests we got was for a thinner topline so we did thin that up from the MP-18. We also have a narrower, cambered sole that many players requested.
TGW: The MP-20 line also has a multi-material option, the MMC irons. How are these irons designed?
CV: With the MMC model, we wanted to improve long iron performance and make more workable short irons as well as improve feel and sound. So in addition to our Grain Flow Forged HD construction with 1025E mild carbon steel, we included titanium and tungsten in the club head. The titanium in the muscle of the iron increases MOI and improves feel and sound at impact. A 12-gram tungsten weight is inserted into the toe of the 4-7 irons for higher launch and a boost in MOI. The MMC is the elite player’s cavity.
TGW: It looks like you’ve brought the Hot Metal design to the MP family?
CV: Yes, we’ve brought the 4135 Chromoly construction to the MP line in the MP-20 Hot Metal Blade. These irons are hollow with a thin topline and flexible sole. The face is a CORTECH multi-thickness design to ensure uniform performance all across the club face. We used 12-gram tungsten weights in the heel and toe of the 2-7 irons to place the center of gravity lower and deeper as well as increase MOI.
TGW: Finally, do you have something special in the works for left-handers?
CV: We do, we have a set called MP-20 SEL, or Special Edition Leftie. It is 3 iron through pitching wedge and we’ve created this set just for them. The 3 and 4 irons are based on the HMB design while the 5 iron-pitching wedge is based on the MB design.
