Mizuno JPX 921 Tour Irons Review by TGW
Technology
Mizuno JPX 921 Tour irons are made with their signature Grain Flow Forged HD process at their facility in Hiroshima, Japan. Every club head starts with a single piece of 1025E Pure Select mild carbon steel and is then forged into shape. This process creates a tighter, more compact grain structure to give these irons that signature Mizuno feel.
Mizuno also included their Stability Frame structure with toe-bias weighting to position the center of gravity where you need it for more distance. It also helps provide stability and straighter ball flight for those shots where you don’t hit the ball exactly in the dead center of the club face. The mass of the Stability Frame has less mass in the toe and is spread more evenly around the perimeter of the head. A thicker area behind the impact zone also provides a more pleasing sound and feel when you hit the golf ball.
Finally, the JPX 921 Tour irons feature more refined short irons. Mizuno uses an even narrower sole in the scoring clubs to provide clean, consistent turf interaction in the part of your game where precision is even more important than ever.
Performance
To test the performance of the Mizuno JPX 921 Tour irons, we enlisted the help of Rick Hatfield. Rick is the head golf pro at Flint Hills National Golf Club and TGW’s resident product expert. With a 7-iron swing speed of 83 mph, we saw an average carry distance of 155 yards with an average ball speed of 111 mph. These numbers were impressive for a Tour blade iron. We also noted a spin rate of 6,500-7,000 rpm which will help golfers hold the green from a 7-iron distance.
Who It’s For
Mizuno JPX 921 Tour irons are made for competitive golfers and top-level amateurs. Lower handicap golfers who want precision and control while placing a premium on feel will gravitate to the JPX 921 Tour model. These irons still produce more distance and forgiveness, giving them a wider appeal to skilled golfers who still want a little bit of help without being punished too harshly for the occasional miss-hit.
Appearance
The Mizuno JPX 921 Tour irons are a compact, player’s shaped iron. They feature a muscle back geometry with the Stability Frame structure in a small shape that better golfers prefer at address. These irons have a sharper look with clean, thin lines. The whole look is accentuated by Mizuno’s signature pearl brush finish which reduces glare to minimize distractions.
Feel & Sound
Mizuno takes a massive amount of pride in the feel and sound of their irons and the JPX 921 Tour irons are no different. Their research of vibration patterns has allowed the Mizuno team to reconfigure weighting for a more satisfying feel and sound at impact. Their use of mild carbon and their signature forging process makes the 921 Tour irons feel smooth and soft yet solid at impact.
