Technology
Starting in Mizuno’s storied facility in Hiroshima, Japan, the JPX 921 Forged irons are created using their signature Grain Flow Forged HD process. This process creates a tighter, more compact grain structure to give these irons that patented Mizuno feel. But instead of using carbon steel, Mizuno makes these clubs from their Chromoly 4120 material. Chromoly is stronger and lighter, allowing Mizuno to make the club face 0.5mm thinner to produce the fastest peak ball speed and average ball speed ever in a full-body forged iron.
Mizuno then utilizes its Stability Frame with a couple of changes in the 921 Forged iron set. It still features toe-bias weighting for stability, but they have taken some of the mass out of the toe and spread it around the perimeter of the club head. That perimeter weighting helps keep the head stable and offers forgiveness when you don’t hit the ball quite square in the center of the face.
Finally, Mizuno squeezed even more forgiveness into this compact iron shape with a CNC back milled slot. This slot is milled in parallel to the club face and is 6.4% wider than previous versions to further increase forgiveness from a smaller club head.
Performance
To test the performance of the Mizuno JPX 921 Forged irons, we enlisted the help of Rick Hatfield. Rick is the head golf pro at Flint Hills National Golf Club and TGW’s resident product expert. During our testing, Rick was swinging the 7-iron at 83 mph and was seeing an average ball speed of 112 mph. This produced an average spin rate of around 6,500 rpm and made for an average carry distance of 159 yards. The speed and distance were there, along with a trajectory you would expect in an iron such as this to help you hit and hold the green.
Who It’s For
The Mizuno JPX 921 Forged irons are in the players’ distance iron category. With their compact shape and sleek lines, they fit the preference of the better golfer when set down by the ball. The thinner, hotter face helps get more distance out of these forged irons while a reconfigured Stability Frame makes them more forgiving. Golfers who like a smaller profile but still want distance and forgiveness help will enjoy the JPX 921 Forged model.
Appearance
Mizuno JPX 921 Forged irons are sleek, compact golf clubs with a shorter blade length throughout the iron set. They are made with a thinner topline, beveled trailing edge, and reduced offset that appeals to the eye of the better golfer. Then Mizuno finishes it off with their pearl brush finish that reduces glare to minimize distractions down by the ball.
Feel & Sound
Mizuno continues its tradition of producing irons with outstanding feel and sound. The JPX 921 Forged irons are made with premium materials and Mizuno’s stand-out forging process to make these irons feel smooth and solid when you hit the golf ball.
