Building a Set of Kid Golf Clubs
William Shakespeare famously wrote “All the world’s a stage … and one man in his time plays many parts.” Chances are, if Will were to hit the links a little more often, he would agree with a similar sentiment that all the world’s a golf course. And in a man’s time, one man plays with many club sets. Women, too, for that matter. If golf weren’t such a deceptively complex game, we’d all be playing with the same 14 clubs. The fact is, though, that club sets differ from player to player, and what goes in your golf bag is largely dependent upon your age and skill level. For kids who are just beginning to play the game, golf is not yet a competitive sport. The goal at this level isn’t necessarily to have the lowest score, but to have a fun and positive experience that will encourage continued playing. So what clubs should go into your kid’s bag? Here are a few thoughts for making up a solid set that will make the game as fun as possible.
When they’re just getting started
First off, there’s no need for a kid to have a full 14-club golf bag. Many experts recommend starting your young player out with just a wedge. Why? Because it gets the ball in the air, which is a great way to get kids excited about golf. A basic combination of a wedge and a driver might be just the ticket for younger players. Once they’re ready to branch out a little more, consider expanding their set with a handful of core clubs. We suggest a five wood, a five iron and a seven iron. Together, these pieces provide a solid foundation with which kids can learn how to hit in most situations. Part of the fun of watching your kid grow into golfing is that you get to watch them progress. As their game improves, you’ll be able to draw on your own golf knowledge and help expand their set with clubs that will help them improve. The more they play and the better they get, the more diverse a range of clubs they’ll need. But for starters, the clubs we suggested above will allow them to get familiar with the game and have a great time while doing so.
