Cobra is taking a new approach to how golf clubs are made with the new Cobra King Tour MIM irons. Irons are traditionally either cast or forged. But the new King Tour MIM irons are neither. They are made through a process called metal injection molding. That’s what MIM stands for. Cobra chose this process for its ability to create precise shapes and provide soft feel. In TGW’s exclusive review, we will take you inside the design and show you how they performed in our testing.
Cobra King Tour MIM Irons Review
Technology
The key technologies in the Cobra King Tour MIM irons begin with the metal injection molding process. These golf clubs are not cast or forged. Cobra found that neither of the traditional methods of making golf irons provided the soft feel they were seeking. Metal injection molding allowed Cobra to make these irons exceptionally soft with precision to the shape of each golf club exactly how they wanted it.
Next, Cobra placed a tungsten weight in the toe of the club head. This weight aligns the center of gravity with the impact zone for pure feel and precise control when you hit the golf ball. Having that additional high-density weight in the perimeter of the head also adds stability and forgiveness.
Finally, Cobra’s engineers placed a thermoplastic polyurethane insert behind the hitting zone to create an even more soft feel. The TPU material absorbs unwanted vibrations to smooth out every shot.
Performance
We tested the Cobra King Tour MIM irons with Rick Hatfield, head golf pro at Flint Hills National Golf Club and TGW’s resident product expert. Rick used the 7-iron during testing which he swings in the range of 82 to 84 mph. We saw an average ball speed of 109.2 mph with the King Tour irons. Spin averaged 5,962 rpm which is appropriate for this type of iron and player. That’s plenty of spin to hold a green but not too much that will cause you to lose distance. That all added up to an average carry distance of 151 yards with the 7-iron.
Who It’s For
As “Tour” in the name suggests, the Cobra King Tour MIM irons are designed for more skilled golfers. This iron does offer more forgiveness than your standard blade. These golf clubs will perform best for golfers who have higher club head speed, need to control and shape their shots, and want appropriate gapping between their irons.
Appearance
The Cobra King Tour MIM irons feature a classic look with a high gloss chrome finish. They have a compact blade blend, a little bit of a cavity that hides at address, and a thinner topline like you would expect from a Tour iron. When testing these irons out, Rick did note that the heel of these irons does sit up a little bit more than similar irons in its class.
Feel & Sound
Cobra’s King Tour MIM irons feel solid when making shots. The soft feel and reduced vibrations are exactly what a better golfer wants from their irons. The sound very much matches that feel at impact, solid and pleasing as you would expect from this type of golf club.
