Cobra King Tec Hybrid Review by TGW
Technology
For the first time in a hybrid, Cobra utilized a forged PWRSHELL face cup in the King Tec design. This construction wraps around the sole of the golf club to return more energy to the golf ball at impact. That gives you maximum speed and distance on every shot.
The King Tec hybrid also has a lightweight carbon fiber crown. By using carbon fiber material in the crown, Cobra freed up 10 grams of weight that was repositioned to lower the center of gravity which creates higher launch with less spin and increased carry distance.
Cobra’s King Tec hybrid is fully adjustable with both an adjustable hosel and changeable sole weights. Each golf club comes with two 12-gram weights and one 3-gram weight that can be moved around to three different positions on the bottom of the club head to produce your desired shot. In the toe setting, you get neutral to fade-biased flight with high launch and low spin. The heel setting offers neutral to draw-biased flight with the highest launch and low spin. Finally, the front setting delivers the straightest flight, fastest ball speed, mid-high launch, and the lowest spin for maximum distance.
Performance
To test the performance of the Cobra King Tec hybrid, we enlisted the help of Rick Hatfield, TGW’s Master Fitter and resident product expert. For this test, Rick hit the 4 hybrid with a standard loft of 19°.
In the standard weight setting, Rick averaged 208 yards of carry distance along with a ball speed of 132.9 mph and spin rate of 4,024 rpm. His average launch angle was 14.7°. Then he moved the weights to the most draw-biased position. While his ball speed, spin rate, and distance were all similar, Rick was getting the ball to move an average of 30 yards left of center. That is a healthy amount of draw bias for a golfer who needs to hit that type of shot. Finally, Rick hit the King Tec hybrid in its most fade-biased setting. His natural shot shape brings the ball 5 to 15 yards left of the centerline. With the fade weight setup, Rick hit his shots right at the centerline.
Who It’s For
Cobra considers the King Tec hybrid to be a better player’s hybrid. Because this golf club sits so square at address and features maximum adjustability so you can dial in your preferred shot shape, this is a hybrid golf club built for the lower handicap and more skilled golfers.
Appearance
The Cobra King Tec hybrid comes in a stealth-like gray and black color that looks sleek down by the ball. It looks clean at address and sets up square to your target, giving it a pleasing look as you prepare to take your shot. That gray and black finish also helps the golf ball stand out.
Feel & Sound
The Cobra King Tec hybrids feel solid at impact with clean turf interaction. The sound is pleasing, providing a solid, high click when you strike the golf ball.
