Cobra King RAD Irons Review by TGW
Technology
Cobra King RAD irons feature radial weighting that is designed to optimize speed and forgiveness by placing weight strategically around the center of gravity. The farther away mass can be positioned from the center of gravity, the better you can make that performance. Cobra placed 10 grams of weight in the toe and another 3 grams in the heel to create the ideal blend of stability, low spin, and high speed.
Then, Cobra placed another 10-gram weight in the toe that helps keep the center of gravity centered in the club head. That added perimeter weight also adds forgiveness, making the club more stable to protect speed and distance on shots hit away from the center of the club face.
Next, they added their forged PWRSHELL face insert. The face insert is made from 17-4 stainless steel. This material is incredibly strong, allowing Cobra to make the face thinner and increase the flexibility in and around the sweet spot. A thinner, more flexible face means faster ball speed, higher launch, and more distance.
The King RAD irons are then topped off with a 3D-printed medallion on the back of the club head. This unique structure saves weight that can be placed elsewhere. It also fine-tunes the sound and feel of the irons to be more pleasing when you strike the golf ball.
Performance
To put the Cobra King RAD irons to the test, we enlisted the help of Rick Hatfield, head golf pro at Flint Hills National Golf Club and TGW’s resident product expert. For our test, Rick hit the 7-iron with the stock steel shaft. His average swing speed was between 84 and 85 mph which is a little faster than usual. The average ball speed Rick achieved of 116.7 mph was exceptional. His spin rate was also appropriate for a 7-iron at an average of 4,964 rpm. Overall, Rick’s average carry distance was an impressive 168 yards with plenty of height and spin to stop and hold most greens.
Who It’s For
Cobra King RAD irons are for golfers who are looking to get maximum distance and maximum forgiveness. These are game improvement irons, loaded with speed and distance technology to help you hit the ball father, along with a specialized weighting configuration to help make these golf clubs more stable and forgiving for those times when you don’t make pure contact with the golf ball.
Appearance
The Cobra King RAD irons look like a typical game improvement golf club with its oversized club head and perimeter weighting. They again included the carbon insert in the topline of the club which saves weight and helps hide the thickness of the club at address.
Feel & Sound
During our testing, Rick noted that the Cobra King RAD irons have a distinct clicking sound. He described it as someone snapping their fingers. He also remarked that the feel of these irons was great, very explosive, and the turf interaction was smooth and clean.
