The new Cobra King RAD fairway woods are here to provide a powerful, fast, long option for golfers in the top end of their golf club set. Their revolutionary radial weighting creates fairways that launch high, spin less, and give you more distance whether you are hitting them off the tee or off the deck. These golf clubs also combined signature fairway wood technology with some of the features Cobra included in the King RAD drivers for ultimate performance. Learn all about the design and see them in action in TGW’s review.
Cobra King RAD Fairway Woods Review by TGW
Technology
The Cobra King RAD fairway woods are built around Cobra’s new concept of Radial Weighting. This is the strategic placement of weight around the center of gravity to optimize speed, spin, forgiveness, and flight direction. By placing more weight in the extreme front of the club head, Cobra has created the optimal combination of a lower center of gravity, extremely low spin, and their fastest ball speeds ever.
Cobra added their signature rails to the RAD fairway woods. They placed their hollow split rails on the sole of the club. By using hollow rails in the front, they have created 70% more flex from heel to toe. That additional flex helps increase ball speed and produce higher launch.
In addition to the fairway wood-specific radial weighting and their signature rails, Cobra has included some of their driver technologies as well. First, they included the updated CNC-milled Infinity Face with a new infinity edge design. This expands the milled area to wrap around the edges of the face, increasing the milled area by 95% to make the zone of maximum ball speed even larger. Then they updated the crown to be more like the driver as well. The thin-ply Carbon Wrap Crown system uses a new material that is 30% thinner than previous versions, saving 6 grams of weight to be moved elsewhere for optimized performance.
Performance
We took the Cobra King RAD fairway woods to the golf course to test them with the help of Rick Hatfield, head golf pro at Flint Hills National Golf Club and TGW’s resident product expert. For our test, Rick hit the 14.5° King RAD 3-wood. His average swing speed with this club was 94 mph with an appropriate ball speed of 135.1 mph on average. He averaged 3,585 rpm of spin on each shot with a launch angle of 14.4°. Overall, Rick’s average carry distance with the RAD fairway wood was 211 yards with a descent angle that will allow plenty of extra distance on the rollout.
Who It’s For
Cobra offers 3 different models in the King RAD fairway wood line. First is the Cobra King RAD fairway. The standard model is made for golfers of all ability levels. It features low spin, high launch, and powerful distance that all golfers can benefit from.
Next is the Cobra King RAD Tour fairway wood. It comes in an oversized Big Tour 3-wood as well as a Tour 5-wood. The Tour versions are made for more skilled golfers who need added distance through spin reduction. These models feature the lowest spin and the lowest launch while offering maximum workability for better golfers to shape their shots.
Finally, Cobra offers the King RAD fairway wood in a Draw model. This is for the golfer who struggles with a slice. Heel-biased radial weighting makes it easier to get the face closed at impact to reduce that left-to-right curving miss. For golfers who consistently miss their target far to the right, this is the RAD fairway for you.
Appearance
Cobra King RAD fairway woods have a traditional shape and look at address. With the carbon fiber crown and infinity edge face design, they do stand out and help capture the ball as you line up your shot. The Big Tour model features an oversized head that is a little larger than the other models, inspiring confidence off the tee and off the deck.
Feel & Sound
The Cobra King RAD fairway woods sound and feel solid when hitting the golf ball. They are fast and powerful and you can feel that when you swing these clubs. The turf interaction was also clean and smooth, making for a pleasing swing as you hit the ball.
