Cobra King RAD Drivers Revolutionize Weighting for High Speed, Low Spin Performance

Cobra’s new family of drivers is here: Cobra King RAD drivers. These golf clubs are built for speed and power by revolutionizing the way weight is positioned in the club head. By creating new, unique combinations of weighting, Cobra’s RAD drivers push ball speed and forgiveness to new heights. There are three different RAD drivers to choose from: RAD, RAD X B, and RAD Draw. TGW’s review will take you inside the technology and design of these drivers and show them to you in action in our exclusive videos.

Technology

Cobra King RAD drivers are built around the weighting in each model. Engineers have placed specific weights in exact locations of each of the three models in order to fine-tune the exact performance golfers are looking for when they choose a specific driver.

  • The Cobra King RAD driver features 28 grams of weight positioned as far forward as possible (16 grams fixed and 12 grams adjustable) to produce super low spin and Cobra’s fastest ball speeds. Another 10 grams in the back of the club head (8 grams fixed and 2 grams adjustable) creates a balance between speed and forgiveness with added customization.
  • The Cobra King RAD X B driver has 20 grams of weight placed far back in the club head (14 grams fixed and 6 grams replaceable) to create Cobra’s most forgiving RAD driver model. Another 8 grams of fixed weight in the front generates low spin and Cobra’s fastest ball speeds.
  • The cobra King RAD Draw driver features 10 grams of weight in the heel of the club to make closing the face easier, creating draw-biased, slice-correcting performance. An added 14 grams of weight in the back increases forgiveness while 8 grams of weight in the front helps lower spin and increase speed for maximum distance.

After adjusting the weighting, Cobra adjusted a few of their signature technologies with updates that work better with these latest designs. The thin-ply Carbon Wrap Crown system uses a new material that is 30% thinner than previous versions, saving 6 grams of weight to be moved elsewhere for optimized performance. They also refined the T-Bar Speed Chassis to be 7 grams lighter, freeing up even more weight that can be placed in more optimal locations.

Finally, the RAD drivers feature an updated CNC-milled Infinity Face with a new infinity edge design. This expands the milled area to wrap around the edges of the face, increasing the milled area by 95% to make the zone of maximum ball speed even larger.

Performance

To test the performance of the Cobra King RAD drivers, we took them to Rick Hatfield, head golf pro at Flint Hills National Golf Club and TGW’s resident product expert. Rick tested all three models individually to see how they stack up based on their performance promises.

First up, we tested the Cobra King RAD driver. Rick averaged a swing speed of 99 mph with this golf club with an impressive average ball speed of 146.6 mph. He hit the 10.5° driver adjusted down to 9° and still saw a launch angle of 14.4° with an average spin of 2,779 rpm. All together, Rick averaged 246 yards of carry distance with this club.

Next, we tested the Cobra King RAD X B driver. Consistent with all drivers, Rick’s average swing speed was 99 mph and produced an average ball speed of 145.8 mph. One performance factor to note with the RAD X B golf club was the lower spin. Rick’s average spin with this driver was 2,442 rpm. With a nice, penetrating ball flight, we saw an average carry distance of 245 yards but that flight and landing angle will produce even more distance with a solid roll-out.

Finally, we tested the Cobra King RAD Draw driver. Rick maintained his usual average swing speed of 99 mph and his ball speed was consistent with the other drivers as well at 145.9 mph. Our testing produced a little bit higher launch angle than the other two models at 15.8° along with some extra spin at an average of 3,122 rpm. All told, Rick averaged 238 yards of carry distance with the RAD Draw golf club.

Who It’s For

The Cobra RAD driver is designed for the golfer looking for that ideal combination of distance and forgiveness. For the player who wants some adjustability and workability off the tee with those characteristics, this is the model for you.

The Cobra RAD X B driver is the game improvement offering of this driver family. With its larger footprint and elongated shape, it features more weight in the back and perimeter of the club head to help boost stability and forgiveness. Players who need some help finding the fairway off the tee more often will benefit from this model.

The Cobra RAD Draw driver is made for golfers who struggle with a slice. Reconfigured weighting makes it easier to close the face at address and eliminate that big curving miss out to the right. Players that consistently miss right off the tee will see the most benefit from the Draw model golf club.

Appearance

The Cobra King RAD drivers come in two different color options to suit your preference. One is a deep navy with red and white accents while the other is black with a vibrant yellow accent color. One important part of the appearance of these drivers is the way the Infinity Edge milled face stands out. The milled part of the face wraps around giving it a unique look at address.

The RAD X B model has a noticeably larger footprint and looks longer from face to the back at address. This gives it a much more game-improvement shape for the golfer looking for some added forgiveness.

The RAD Draw version sets up clean at address and during testing, Rick noted that down by the ball you would never guess this is a draw-biased driver.

Feel & Sound

The Cobra King RAD drivers feel and sound is best described as firm and solid. The sound at impact is high-pitched but pleasing, letting you know you have made solid contact with the golf ball. These golf clubs do not feel hollow and it does not tend to vibrate a lot. These drivers deliver smooth, solid performance with every shot off the tee.
