Check out our exclusive interview and get the inside story of their design in our Q & A with the Cleveland product experts.
TGW: This year, Cleveland has a new Launcher HB Turbo driver and fairway wood as well as the Launcher Halo hybrid. Who are these golf clubs for?
Cleveland: These clubs are for the more average player. Golfers who are seeking more forgiving performance and they don’t have that Tour-level swing speed, we made these clubs for them to add speed and distance through the design.
TGW: Let’s start with the driver, what’s new in the Launcher HB Turbo model?
Cleveland: We built this design from the ground up on three factors: Speed, Launch, and Swing. Speed was our biggest improvement, followed by more forgiveness.
Speed comes from the Turbo Charged Cup Face and HiBore Crown. The new face uses more high-strength titanium wrapped around the perimeter and features variable thickness to increase speed all over the club face. Our HiBore crown makes the club more aerodynamic to boost swing speed.
To increase launch and get the ball in the air easier, we had to get weight low and deep in the head. We freed up more weight to move there by redesigning the crown and utilizing an ultralight, non-adjustable hosel.
Finally, to improve swing, we have a shaft with weight moved up toward the hands. It’s more counter-balanced for a smoother swing.
TGW: And you also made this driver in a draw-biased model?
Cleveland: We did. The Turbo Draw model is designed to help golfers get the face closed at impact. It has the same internal weighting as the standard driver. The face angle is 2° closed and we redesigned the bulge and roll so it looks better at address.
TGW: Then looking at the fairway woods, they look nearly identical to the drivers.
Cleveland: The fairway woods are built on the same platform. They have the same Turbo Charged face, HiBore Crown, low and deep weighting, and ultralight hosel. They are a little bigger than previous Launcher fairways and more forgiving. The Launcher Turbo HB fairways are a slightly draw biased.
TGW: But the hybrid is different yet from those two clubs, what is the story behind it?
Cleveland: The Launcher Halo hybrids did not get the Turbo name because they are truly different. They hit out of every lie. We used our wedge testing system to test their performance off all types of ground. Our research found that from the distance where most golfers would be hitting a hybrid, they are more likely to be in the rough so that performance is important to us.
TGW: What are some of the key features that help golfers get out of those lies and reach the green easier?
Cleveland: The most important thing about the Halo hybrids is the Gliderail System. The structure on the sole of the club improves interaction with the turf and helps retain speed as you make contact. Even the edge leading into the rails is redesigned to get in and out of the turf easier.
These hybrids also include the HiBore Crown to lower the center of gravity. High launch is important with a hybrid so putting this crown on these clubs is a big improvement in ball flight.
Finally, the face is made of high-strength steel with variable thickness for more speed across a larger impact area.
