There is a proven method on how to make a putter more accurate. Cleveland is here to change that formula. Yes, a bigger clubhead, more weight on the perimeter, and increased stability help you roll better putts. Cleveland added forward weighting, changed up the materials, and created the new Frontline putters. Cleveland Frontline Putters Review by TGW
Technology
The Cleveland Frontline putters get their name from the weights placed in the face of the club. This forward weight brings the center of gravity forward and makes the club head more stable. When you do happen to strike a putt off-center, that added weight keeps the head stable, resisting the desire to twist, so your putt stays on its intended target line. This is heavy-duty weight, made of metal injection molded tungsten, for a total of 47.3 grams of mass in the face of the putter.
Cleveland also uses their Speed Optimized Face Technology, or SOFT, to normalize ball speed everywhere on the putter face. SOFT maintains ball speed across the entire face, even on off-center strikes, to ensure consistent speed and distance control. Putts lose ball speed when you don’t strike the ball on the sweet spot. With this unique face construction, you don’t have to worry about missing a putt short if you don’t hit it dead-center.
A coarse, diamond-shaped CNC milling pattern on the face softens the feel while increasing friction for consistent putts that start and end on your intended target line. Deep grooves help grab the ball and impart the proper spin to keep putts rolling true.
Finally, Cleveland uses its signature 2135 alignment technology. By raising the sightline to the radius of a golf ball, which is 21.35 millimeters above the ground, players can line up more accurately regardless of their preferred setup position. Not all golfers set up to the ball the same. Some have their eyes inside the ball while others have their eyes outside. Unless you set up with your eyes directly over the ball, an alignment line that doesn’t meet the exact center of the golf ball doesn’t help you much. Cleveland’s 2135 Technology fixes that.
Performance
To get feedback on the performance of the Cleveland Frontline putters, we took them to Rick Hatfield. Rick is the head golf pro at Flint Hills National Golf Club and TGW’s resident product expert. He made plenty of putts while testing the Frontline putters. Rick noted that the speed and distance control was easy and incredibly consistent, as advertised with these golf clubs. Golfers who are not used to a softer putter will have to adjust and learn how hard to hit the ball with a Frontline putter, but Rick said once he adjusted to the soft feel and sound, the speed and distance were consistent putt after putt.
Who It’s For
Cleveland’s Frontline putters are designed to benefit all golfers. With 7 different head shapes and 13 models in total, there is a shape and toe hang profile to fit every player. Golfers can choose their favorite head design and pick the hosel and toe hang that best fits their stroke. Rick did not during testing that with the forward weight, golfers who tend to miss left will benefit more from the Frontline putters with more toe hang while golfers who tend to miss to the right will want a more face-balanced model.
Appearance
The Cleveland Frontline putters feature a sleek black finish that allows you to focus on alignment and your target down by the golf ball. Rick noted that the black finish helped the 2135 alignment line stand out even more, allowing for quick and easy aiming on every putt. They come in a variety of head shapes from a blade model up to larger mallets. There is a design in the Frontline family to fit the eye of every golfer.
Feel & Sound
The feel and sound of the Cleveland Frontline putters are best designed as soft. That is Cleveland’s intention with their face technology in these putters. They feel soft when you strike the golf ball and the sound is more muted.
